My name is Kathy Chamberlln and I have lived in Aspen, Colorado for 34 years. I started s~dying ceramics at Anderson Ranch in 1969. I soon realized by the mid 70 s that I could not sustain a living selling pottery and began teaching ceramics in this communi~ for the next 8 years. I believe this is the prevailing derision most potters make, at least to stay active in ceramics, [hey have to teach. I came back to this craft with new veneration when the farmers market allowed crafts to be sold, with optimistic hope for an outlet to sell my ceramics. The only gallery in town that will even look at my pottery or other local artists is the Heather Gallery and they are closing their doors this April 2003 to move down to Basalt. My other option is driving thousands of miles and leaving a carbon dioxide footprint, to craft trade shows back East. Most of the Aspen retail stores selling hmctional ceramics is imported, not even "made in the USA." American-made crafts are experiendng a new resurgence, especially after Sept. 11. I would like to have some recognition that my pottery is made, produced and fired in Aspen, Colorado. "Made in Aspen." I will never recoup my equipment or overhead costs (around $25,000.00) selling pottery, but at the farmers market I could interact with my community and peers in my hometown, again. Like the farmers, my primary material is day or earth. I make, produce and fire the pottery the old fashion way, with my hands. The vessels I make hold the produce, flowers, fruit and food that the farmers bring to the market to sell. It is a natural and whole partnership that pottery, espedally locagy made, be side by side at the Saturday farmers market. Thank you for your time and consideration. Sincerely, Kathy Chamberlin Aspen Ceramic Studio 34 Twining Fiats Rd Aspen, CO 81611 97O-923-5658 P65 IiIiI~-~?-~00~ 02:~9 PM KIM RAYMON~ ARCH~T~'~'T~ 9709252252 P.OI ii~ ASPEN SATURDAY MARKET APPLICATION Name of Business ~e~ign% ~9 k.e,~e, Da.,~e Contactp~rson (s) ~e~ ~~ ....... [ have a store on Main Street where I sell my handmade jewelry. I have been hearing a lot of wonderful things about the Aspe. n Saturday Market and I am w~riting to ask you to consider my work for this coming summer. I believe my jewelry would be a perfect fit fo~ the Satur4ay Market. I am a local girl who graduated from Aspen High School 'itl 1989. Ar/er graduating from the University. of Colorado in 1996 I moved back to Aspen where I started my jewelry business. Over the last five years I haye built my reputation for beautiful, affordable jewelry by selling at the Snowmass Arts and Crafts Fait, Basalt River Days, Carbondale Mountain Fair, and the Spring and Fall Janus jazz Aspen Shows. There would be no conflict with local merchants because I am not showing my jewelry in Aspen this summer.- I already have an excellent Aspen clientele who would be sure to send their visiting guests to the market to see me. Most importantly, my jewelry is handmade in the valley, is beautiful and reasonably priced, and makes a nnique "local" gift that is getting harder and harder to find. I also have a professional show tent and elegant displays. In short, I would love to be a part of the Satarday Market! Please let me know if you need any more information. I look forward to speaking to you in the near furore... Sincerely, Owner/Designer Harmony Scott Jewelry Design 199 MAIN STREE'T CARBONDALE.
