(Series of 2003) A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF ASPEN, COLORADO, ENDORSING THE CONSTRUCTION OF A NEW MAROON CREEK BRIDGE AND APPROACHES, AND REQUESTING THAT THE COLORADO DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION (CDOT) EXPEDITE FUNDING FOR THIS PROJECT. WHEREAS, the historic Maroon Creek Bridge was built in 1888 as a railroad trestle, before being converted to automobile use in 1929; and WHEREAS, the Maroon Creek Bridge is the oldest bridge still in use on Colorado's State Highway system; and WHEREAS, the new Maroon Creek Bridge should be built in conjunction with the restoration of the 115-year-old Maroon Creek Bridge taking into account the public's best interest; and WHEREAS, the City of Aspen and Pitkin County have worked cooperatively with CDOT to complete Maroon Creek Road and Tmscott Drive intersection improvements; and WHEREAS, construction of the new Maroon Creek Bridge and its approaches is needed in order to provide a safer alternative for the traveling public; and WHEREAS, construction of the new Maroon Creek Bridge is not inconsistent with the results of the City of Aspen and Pitkin County votes in November 2002 in which the voters expressed their preference for the Entrance to Aspen remaining on the current alignment between the Maroon Creek roundabout and 7~ and Main Streets; and WHEREAS, the new Maroon Creek Bridge should be designed in conjunction with the City of Aspen's studies of changes to the exist'rog alignment between the Maroon Creek roundabout and 7t~ and Main Streets; and WHEREAS, the voters of the City of Aspen would need to approve a right-of-way easement to authorize CDOT to proceed with construction, operation and maintenance of a bridge with two lanes for general traffic and two exclusive bus lanes. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF ASPEN, COLORADO, THAT: 1. The City Council hereby reaffirms its support for the construction of the new Maroon Creek Bridge and its approaches between Buttermilk and the Maroon Creek/SH82 Roundabout. 2. The City Council respectfully requests that CDOT expedite funding so that construction of this project can proceed at the earliest possible date.
