A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF ASPEN,
COLORADO, RECOMMENDING COLORADO'S SENATORS SUPPORT THE
MCCAIN-LIEBERMAN CLIMATE STEWARDSHIP ACT (S. 139)
WHEREAS, Senators John McCain and Joseph Lieberman have introduced
the Climate Stewardship Act, S 139, to limit greenhouse gas emissions in the
United States and reduce dependence upon foreign oil, and
WHEREAS, global warming threatens serious envtronmental consequences,
including loss of species, more droughts and extreme weather events, increases in
sea level, spread of infectious diseases, and loss of habitats, and
WHEREAS, global wanmng poses a direct threat to Aspen's skiing-based
economy, with Aspen's summers having increased by four days per decade since
1949 and with Aspen's winters beginning two weeks later in the last twenty years
compared to the first twenty years of records, and
WHEREAS, the City Council of the City of Aspen has strongly supported
efforts to reduce global warming, including obtaining 57% of the City of Aspen's
electricity supply from renewable wind and hydropower that do not contribute to
global warmtng, green building designs, and lighting retrofits, and
WHEREAS, the United States is the world's number one producer of
greenhouse-causing gases, and should lead the world in reductng greenhouse gas
emtssions, whereas the City of Aspen wants to be a leader among United States
commumties, and whereas voluntary measures have not been effective enough,
and
WHEREAS, the bi-partisan Climate Stewardship Act takes the first steps
toward reducing greenhouse gas emisstons by using a market-based approach and
encouraging ~nnovation,
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF
THE CITY OF ASPEN, COLORADO:

The City Council of the City of Aspen hereby supports the McCain
Lieberman Climate Stewardship Act (S-139) and encourages its Senators and
Congressional Representatives to support the bill as well.
