HomeMy WebLinkAboutresolution.council.005-88 RESOLUTION NO... ~ (Series of 1988) Supporting the Central American Peace Process WHEREAS, Aspen Institute for Humanistic Studies has held conferences annually in Aspen on nuclear disarmament; and WHEREAS, there has been a long tradition in the Aspen community to seek and support all initiatives for peace throughout the world; and WHEREAS, on August 7, 1987 the Presidents of the five Republics of Central America signed a regional peace plan designed by Costa Rican President Oscar Arias, winner of the 1987 Nobel Prize for Peace; and WHEREAS, the peace plan seeks to put an end to the armed conflicts in the regIOn which have cost over 200,000 lives in the past decade, and explicitly calls for an end to all foreign funding of irregular forces in the region; and WHEREAS, the United States has spent one billion dollars in Contra support since 1981, at a time when federal support for American cities has declined precipitously, causing untold human suffering in our own cities; and WHEREAS, polls have consistently shown over 60% of the American people opposed to further funding for the Contra; and WHEREAS, there is at this moment an unprecedented and umque opportunity to achieve peace in Central America; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the people and City of Aspen add their voices in support of the Central American Peace Plan; that they call for an end to U.S. support, both overt and covert, to the Contra; that they urge their federal representatives to lend their full support to the peace process, and encourage all the countries of Central America to implement its provisions fully and unconditionally in order to achieve a real and lasting peace.
