CITY OF ASPEN AND CHIBA PREFECTURE RESORT PLANNING COMPETITION TO BE
HELD IN ASPEN
WHEREAS, through the efforts of the Aspen Sister City Committee and as
the result of direct contacts established by Mayor Bill Stirling on his two good
will missions to Japan, a Chiba Prefecture Resort Planning Competition has been
proposed; and
WHEREAS, the Planning Department of the Chiba Prefecture and the
Kanozan Resort Corporation, headed by Mr. Fukusaburo Maeda, visited Aspen,
Colorado, and became intrigued with the "Aspen Idea"; and
WHEREAS, they were so favorably impressed with what they saw that
they decided to call on the talent of Aspen planning and design professionals to
put together ideas for a new Chiba resort; and
WHEREAS, the Kanozan Resort Corporation an the Chiba Prefecture are
putting up $140,000 in prize money for the successful planning/design firm
whose master plan design is selected for the proposed Chiba resort; and
WHEREAS, this master planning competition is an unprecedented
opportunity for Aspen Planning and Design consultants to be recognized for their
efforts in coorporatively planning this newly proposed Chiba resort; and
WHEREAS, three finalists will be selected in early October by the Advisory
Panel and in early 1989 a final jury in Japan will select the prize winning master
planning concept; and
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
ASPEN, on September 12, 1988 endorsed the resort planning competition to be
held in Aspen and acknowledges the continued working relationship between
the people of Aspen and the people of Chiba Prefecture in Japan. The Council
understands that Mr. William Lipsey has been designated as the project
coordinator between Chiba and Colorado for this competition. The Council
believes that this kind of activity bringing Japanese dollars to America in order
to purchase the skills and talents of American Planners and designers is good
and healthy for the inbalance of trade and the future positive relations between
Japan and the United States.
