I~ESOLUTION OF T~us ASPEN CITY COUNCIL
SELECTING T~. 1~I0 GRANDE AT,TGNM~NT AS T~w.
PP~r~<RED AT,TGNMENT FOR Tn~ V~T.T.~y LIGHT RAIL SYSTEM
WHKW~J~S, the Aspen city Council, Pitkin County Board of
County Commissioners, and Snow. ass Village Tow~ Council
(hereinafter, "Elected Officials") implemented a public meeting
process to gather community input regarding the alignment of a
Valley Light Rail System (hereinafter, "VLR") through Pitkin
County;
W/~P~%S, the alignments are generally known as the Highway
alignment and the Rio Grande alignment;
WH~%S, the Elected Officials held a total of six (6)
public meetings on the alignment issue in 1990/91: November 14,
at the Red Roof Inn, Aspen; November 28, Snownass Village;
November 29, Woody Creek; December 7, Co~%munity Center, Aspen;
December 12, City Hall, Aspen; and January 30, City Hall, Aspen;
WheREAS, through the public meeting process it became clear
that it was difficult to develop a consensus for either alignment
because each alignment addressed different, but important goals;
WHEREAS, some Elected Officials felt that a more
comprehensive understanding of the transportation system was
required prior to making a decision on the alignment; and
Wn/~REAS, the Elected Officials felt that it was critical to
the VLR process that they make a decision on a preferred
alignment for the VLE system through Pitkin County.
Wh~REAB, the Elected Officials find that the vision of a
Valley Light Rail is especially important and appropriate given
our dependence on oil and our concerns regarding air quality.
NOW, .~.-K~FORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Aspen City Council
finds that the Rio Grande alignment is their preferred alignment.
1-N~RODUCED, READ AND ADOPTED as provided by law by the City
