A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
ASPEN, COLORADO, RENAMING UTE PARK
(COMMONLY REFERRED TO AS THE UTE CHILDREN'S
PARK) TO "UTE PARK"
WHEREAS, the Ute Indians were the original inhabitants of lands in
and around the City of Aspen, and
WHEREAS, the City of Aspen wishes to improve and expand its
relationship with the Ute Nations through educational programs which create
mutual understanding, respect, and cooperation for the common good of all
people and the natural environment; and
WHEREAS, the week of April 19, 1993, has been designated by ~he
State of Colorado as "Ute Appreciation Week" and the year 1993 has been
designated by the United Nations as "Year of the Indigenous Peoples"; and
WHEREAS, the White River National Forest and the Cities of
Glenwood Springs and Aspen will be sites for major Ute cultural, political, and
spiritual activities during the week of April 19, 1993; and
WHEREAS, the City of Aspen is the owner of certain real property
(commonly referred to as the Ute Children's Park) located in the ci~ of
Aspen, Colorado, and described as follows:
All of Block 48, lying South and West of the Center Line of the
Roaring Fork River, as shown on the Plat of Entry by the Mayor
of Aspen of East Aspen Addition.
which property was permanently dedicated and set aside for use by the public
for park and recreational purposes, and was given the name of "Bavaria Park",
by the Aspen City Council on the 22nd day of July 1966; and
WHEREAS, the City Council of the City of Aspen renamed said park
to "Ute Park" by resolution dated April 17, 1967; and
WHEREAS, the Aspen City Parks Department has recommended and
approved this park as a site to be used by the Ute Nations for their activities
during the week of April 19, 1.993; and
WHEREAS, the City of Aspen was invited by the United National
Environmental Programme to co-sponsor a series of programs honoring the
world's indigenQus peoples during the 1993 U. N. Year of Indigenous Peoples,
and
WHEREAS, the City of Aspen formed a committee named "Earth
Voices" to develop, recommend, and implement programs on indigenous
peoples in the City of Aspen; and
WHEREAS, "Earth Voices" strongly urged the City of Aspen to honor
the Ute Nations by dedicating a park in their name; and
WHEREAS, the City Council now wishes to change the name of said
park to "Ute Park",
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IS RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF
THE CITY OF ASPEN, COLORADO:
That the above described property shall be hereafter known as UTE
PARK and shall hereafter by denominated as such on the "Official Map of the
City of Aspen, Pitkin County, State of Colorado" on file in the office of the
City Engineer in accordance with Section 2-1 of the Municipal Code to reflect
the actions of Council by this Resolution.
INTRODUCED, READ AND ADOPTED by the City Council of the
City of Aspen on the 26th day of April 1993.
I, Kathryn S. Koch, duly appointed and acting City Clerk do certify that
the foregoing is a true and accurate copy of that resolution adopted by the City
Council of the City of Aspen, Colorado at a meeting held on the day
hereinabove stated.
