COLORADO, REGARDING FLUORIDATION OF THE CITY OF ASPEN WATER SUPPLY, AND SETTING FORTH THE REASONS FOR THE COUNCIL'S ACTION WHEREAS, a group of citizens has asked the City Council to discontinue adding fluoride m the City water supply, and as a result the City Council has reviewed many studies and reports, and has heard the testimony of physicians, dentists, chiropractors, citizens, and representatives from Community Health Services and the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, and WHEREAS, the City Council of the City of Aspen has heard compelling evidence from local dentists, the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, and studies done by other health agencies that water fluoridation has a significant beneficial effect in reducing dental caries in children, and WHEREAS, the City Council heard testimony from local Community Health officials about the difficulty of providing adequate fluoride to low income residents and the resulting health effects that would be possible if water fluoridation were discontinued, and WHEREAS, the studies and reports from recognized authorities and from locals who testified, were contradictory in namre, and the studies finding possible negative health effects from fluoride consumption were not confirmed and were many times contradicted, and the consensus of most federal agencies is that while more studies should be done, that there is not at this time, enough evidence to justify discontinuing water fluoridation, NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF ASPEN, COLORADO: Section 1 That the City Council of the City of Aspen hereby approves continued fluoridation of the City of Aspen water supply at this time, having determined that existing data on health benefits is compelling, while data on possible harmful effects is limited, contradictory~and unproven, so that a change would be more harmful than beneficial, given the information that exists at this time.
