A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF ASPEN, COLORADO
SUPPORTING STATEWIDE DIESEL EMISSIONS STANDARDS AND INSPECTION
PROGRAMS
WHEREAS, diesel emissions contain carcmogerdc compounds that are harmful to the
public health of residents and visitors to the City of Aspen, Colorado, and
WHEREAS, diesel vehicles can exceed acceptable noise levels, and
WHEREAS, the overwhelming majority of diesel vehicles driving in Aspen are from
outside the city limits and it is likely that the majority are from outside Pitkin County, so that an
inspection program for vehicles registered in the Aspen area alone would be ineffective,
WHEREAS, there is no diesel inspection facility on the Western slope, and
WHEREAS, if the City of Aspen required inspections of all diesel vehicles entering
Aspen, many delivery and construction firms would not find it economically feasible to obtain
inspections just to enter Aspen,
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
ASPEN, COLORADO:
Section 1
The Aspen City Council urges the Colorado Legislature to adopt a uniform, statewide
diesel vehicle inspection program so that all diesel vehicles traveling in Colorado will have
acceptable levels of carcinogenic emissions; to provide adequate enforcement of existing
statewide diesel vehicles opacity standards; and to ensure that statewide diesel 6pacity
standards are stringent enough to protect the health of the citizens of the State of Colorado.
