HomeMy WebLinkAboutresolution.council.105-99 RESOLUTION # lO ~ (Series of 1999) A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF ASPEN, COLORADO SUPPORTING STATEWIDE DIESEL EMISSIONS STANDARDS AND INSPECTION PROGRAMS WHEREAS, diesel emissions contain carcmogerdc compounds that are harmful to the public health of residents and visitors to the City of Aspen, Colorado, and WHEREAS, diesel vehicles can exceed acceptable noise levels, and WHEREAS, the overwhelming majority of diesel vehicles driving in Aspen are from outside the city limits and it is likely that the majority are from outside Pitkin County, so that an inspection program for vehicles registered in the Aspen area alone would be ineffective, WHEREAS, there is no diesel inspection facility on the Western slope, and WHEREAS, if the City of Aspen required inspections of all diesel vehicles entering Aspen, many delivery and construction firms would not find it economically feasible to obtain inspections just to enter Aspen, NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF ASPEN, COLORADO: Section 1 The Aspen City Council urges the Colorado Legislature to adopt a uniform, statewide diesel vehicle inspection program so that all diesel vehicles traveling in Colorado will have acceptable levels of carcinogenic emissions; to provide adequate enforcement of existing statewide diesel vehicles opacity standards; and to ensure that statewide diesel 6pacity standards are stringent enough to protect the health of the citizens of the State of Colorado.
