AN ORDINANCE ADOPTING BY REFERENCE THE NATIONAL
ELECTRIC CODE, 1978 EDITION, AND AMENDING CERTAIN
SECTIONS OF CHAPTER 7, ARTICLE VI OF THE ASPEN
MUNICIPAL CODE
WHEREAS, the City Council desires to adopt, for the bene-
fit of the City of Aspen, the 1978 edition of the National
Electric Code,
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT ORDAINED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF
THE CITY OF ASPEN, COLORADO:
Section 1
That Section 7-156 of the Aspen Municipal Code is hereby
deleted and reenacted to read as follows:
Sec. 7-156. ~ational Electrical Code adopted
Pursuant to the power and authority conferred by the
law of the State of Colorado and the Charter of the
City of Aspen, Colorado, it is hereby adopted as the
electrical code of the City of Aspen, the National
Electrical Code, 1978 Edition, published by the National
Fire Protection Association, 470 Atlantic Avenue,
Boston, Massachusetts, 02210, all to have the same
force and effect as though set forth herein in every
particular.
Section 2
That Section 7-157 of the Aspen Municipal Code is hereby
deleted and reenacted to read as follows:
Sec. 7-157. Amendment.
The following general amendment is made to the provisions
of the National Electrical Code.' 1978 Edition, herein
adopted by reference:
All electrical wiring in Group A, ~ I H and B
occupancies, as defined in the Uniform Building

Code, shall be encased in metal conduits, race-
ways, or in approved armor.
Section 3
That Section 7-158 of the Aspen Municipal Code is hereby
deleted and reenacted to read as follows:
Sec. 7-158. Compliance required; penalty.
(a) It shall be unlawful for any person to install,
alter, repair or maintain any electrical conductors
or equipment within or on any public or private building
within the City of Aspen, or cause the same to be done
contrary to or in violation of any of the provisions
of the National Electrical Code, 1978 Edition, as herein
adopted.
Section 4
That Section 7-161 of the Aspen ~nicipal Code is hereby
deleted and reenacted to read as follows:
Sec. 7-161. Specifications for installations generally.
All service conductors outside a building shall be in
approved conduits. The service cabinet shall be so
arranged that it shall not be over six (6) feet above
a permanent floor. The cabinet may be located inside
or outside the walls of buildings in the nearest
accessible place to the point where the wires enter
the building, but in no case shall there be more than
ten (10) feet of nonfused service entrance wire or
cable located within the confines of any structures,
except as provided in Section 230-47 of the National
Electric Code, 1978 Edition. Approved frangible padlocks
may be placed on switch handles to prevent opening and
closing by unauthorized persons with the prior approval
of the electrical inspector and the fire marshal. Cur.
rent metering devices shall be located outside the

building or in a location always accessible to the
electric utilities which complies with the National
Electrical Code requirements for service panel access.
Section 5
That Section 7-.165 of the Aspen Municipal Code is hereby
deleted and reenacted to read as follow:
Sec. 7-165. Same -- Fees.
Where a permit is required by this article there shall
be imposed an inspection fee as determined by the
schedule adopted in C.R.S. 1973, Section 12-23-117,
as it exists or may hereinafte~ be amended.
Section 6
If any provision of this ordinance or the application
thereof to any person or circumstance is held invalid, such
invalidity shall not affect other provisions or applications of
the ordinance which can be given effect without the invalid
provisions or application, and to this end the provisions of
this ordinance are declared to be severable.
Section 7
A~ublic hearing on the ordinance shall be held on

City Council Chambers, Aspen City Hall~ Aspen, Colorado.

law by the City Council of the City of Aspen, Colorado, at its
