AN ORDINANCE REPEALING THE PREVIOUS TRAFFIC ORDINANCE AND ADOPTING,
WITH MINOR VARIATIONS, THE "MODEL TRAFFIC CODE FOR COLORADO
MUNICIPALITIES, 1962", PROVIDING FOR PENALTIES FOR A VIOLATION
OF THIS ORDINANCE, AND DECLARING AN EMERGENCY TO EXIST:
BE I~ ORDAINED BY the City Council of the City of Aspen,
Colorado:
Section 1: Section 10-1-1, Chapter 1, Title X, of the
official Code of Aspen is hereby amended in its entirety to read
as follows:
10-1-1:
ADOPTION OF MODEL TRAFFIC CODE:
Vehicular and pedestrian traffic within the City
of Aspen, the establishment of rules and
regulations for the issuing of permits, and the
fixing of penalties shall be regulated in
accordance with the Model Traffic Code for Colorado
Municipalities 1962 Edition, three copies of
which shall be on file in the office of the City
Clerk and may be inspected during regular business
hours, the same being hereby referred to, adopted,
and made a part hereof as if fully set forth
herein in full, pursuant to the authority conferred
by the Laws of the State of Colorado; provided,
however, the following portions of such Model Traffic
Code are not adopted and are expressly deleted:
(1) Section 68
(2) Section 69
(3) Section ~2
(4) Section 75
(5) Section 78
(6) Section 79
(7) Section 80
(8) Section 81
(9) Section 82
(10) Section 83
(11) Section ll4c
(12) Section 169
Section 2: Section 10-1-2, Chapter 1, Title X, of the
official Code of Aspen is hereby amended in its entirety to
read as follows:

Three certified copies of the model ordinance are
on file at theoffice of theCity Clerk and may be
inspected during regular business hours. In
addition, copies are available for distribution and
sale to the Public.
Section 3: Section 10-1-3, Chapter 1, Title X, of the
official Code of Aspen is hereby amended in its entirety to
read as follows:

AMENDED SECTIONS:
The following sections of the"Model Traffic
Code for Colorado Municipalitieg, 1962 Edition'
are hereby amended to read as follows:
Section 9 - State speed laws applicable:
The state traffic laws regulating the speed
of vehicles shall be applicable upon all
streets within this municipality, except as
changed by ordinance in which event appropriate
speed limit signs shall be used designating such
changes, and it shall be prima facia unlawful
for any person to drive a vehicle at a speed in
excess of any such speed limits.
Section 35 - Obedience to angle-parking signs or
markings:
Upon those streets which have been signed or marked
for angle parking, no person shall stop, stand or
park a vehicle other than at the angle to the curb
or edge of the roadway indicated by such signs or
markings, and when so parking shall only park on
the right hand side of the street.
Section 57 - Parking prohibited at all times on
certain streets:
When signs are erected giving notice thereof, no
person shall park a vehicle at any time upon
any of the streets so designated.
Section 58 Stopping, standing, or parking prohibited
durinq certain hours on certain streets:
When signs are erected in each block giving notice
thereof, no person shall stop, stand or park a
vehicle between the hours designated thereon.

Section 59 - Parking time 1/mited on certain

When signs are erected giving notice thereof
no person shall stop, stand or park a vehicle
for longer than the time designated by said signs
at any time between those hours so stated by said
signs on any day except Sundays and full legal

66 - Pedestrians to walk on left side of
roadway where sidewalks are not provided;
not to solicit rides:
(a) Pedestrians walking along a street or
roadway where sidewalks are not p~ovided shall
walk on the extreme left side of the street or
roadway facing approaching traffic.

(b) No person shall solicit a ride or
attempt to solicit a ride from the driver
of any private vehicle.
(c) Part (a) of this Section applying to
pedestrians shall also be applicable to
riders of animals.
Section 104 - Clinqinq to Vehicles:
Any person riding upon any bicycle, motorcycle,
motor-driven cycle, coaster, sled, skis, roller
skates or any toy vehicle shall not attach the
same or himself to any vehicle upon any street,
except with permission of the chief of police.
Section 110 - Restrictions on Farm Tractors,
Trailers, Trucks, and Commercial
Vehicles Upon Use of Streets;
When signs are erected giving notice thereof, no
person shall operate or stop, stand or park any
farm tractor,trailer, sem~-trailer, truck or
comercial vehicle with a gross weight in excess
of the amounts specified on such signs on any of
the streets or parts of streets upon which such
signs are so erected.
Section 114 - Traffic Laws Apply to Persons Riding
on Bicycles, Skis, Sleds, or on Animals
or drivinq Animal-drawn Vehicles.
(a) Every person riding a bicycle or driving
any animal drawing a vehicle upon a street shall
be sub3ect to the provisions of this Ordinance
applicable to the driver of a vehicle, except
those provisions of this Ordinance which by
their nature can have no application.
(b) Persons riding or leading animals on
or along any street shall ride or ~ead such
animals on the left side of said street
facin~ approaching traffic. This shall not
apply to persons driving herds of animals
along streets.
(c) Persons on skis traveling on or along
any street shall use the left side of said
street facing approaching traffic and shall
yield the right-of-way to all vehicular traffic.
Skiers when traveling on or along any street
shall proceed single file only.

Section 115 - Use of Coaster, Roller Skates, and
S/milar Devices Restricted.
No person upon roller skates, or riding in or by
means of any coaster, toy vehicle, or similar device,
shall go upon any roadway except while crossing a
street on a crosswalk, and when so crossing such
such person shall be granted all of the rights
and shall be subject to all of the duties applicable
to pedestrians. This section shall not apply upon
any street while set aside as a play street as
authorized by ordinance of this municipality.
Section 4: No person shall sleep in a vehicle parked
upon any street or alley in the City of Aspen, Colorado
Section 5: Penalties for Violations of This ordinance
(1) It is unlawful for any person to violate
any of the provisions of this Ordinance and
such violations shall be punishable as is
hereinafter provided.
(2) Every person convicted of a violation of any
of theprovisions of this Ordinance shall be
subject to a fine not exceeding three hundred
dollars, or by imprisonment not exceeding
90 days.
Section 6: The City Council of the City of Aspen, Colc~ado,
hereby finds, determines and declares this ordinance to be necessary
for the immediate preservation of thepublic peace, health, and safety
and thereby ordains that it shall be in immediate force and effect
from and after its adoption and publication in accordance with the
law.
