A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF ASPEN EXPRESSING
OPPOSITION TO PROPOSED CUTS IN AMTRACK SERVICES
WHEREAS, Amtrack services and facilities provide an efficient
and affordable transportation alternative for persons traveling in
the Western states; and
WHEREAS, the Amtrack facilities in the State of Colorado
generally and in Glenwood Springs specifically, provide a safe,
efficient and affordable means of transportation for persons
wishing to travel to and from the Aspen area; and
WHEREAS, it has come to the attention of the City Council of
the City of Aspen that the Federal government is proposing cuts in
Amtrack services; and
WHEREAS, the City Council desires to express its opposition
to any reduction in the level of Amtrack services, inasmuch as any
reduction would reduce or limit alternatives available to persons
traveling to, from and through the State of Colorado, including
the Aspen area, for safe, efficient and affordable transporta-
tion, and
WHEREAS, the City of Aspen recognizes its obligation and the
concommitant obligation of governmental entities on all levels to
spend and allocate taxpayers' funds in a wise and prudent manner;
and
WHEREAS, recognizing the Federal government's responsibility
as a trustee of public funds, the City of Aspen believes that the
Federal government has a financial and moral obligation to fund
facilities and services which are not viable through private
enterprise but which are vital to the public health and welfare,
such as rail transportation provided by Amtrack.
