A RESOLUTION COMMEMORATING HERBERT BAYER
WHEREAS, the City Council, on behalf of the City and its
visitors and inhabitants, desires to express its sympathy at the
recent death of one of its foremost citizens, Herbert Bayer, and
commemorate his significant accomplishments during his lifetime;
and
WHEREAS, Herbert Bayer was born in Baag, Austria, on April 5,
1900; was a student at the Bauhaus in Weimar, Germany, from 1921
to 1923; was a master at a workshop for graphic design and
topography at the Bauhaus in Dessau, Germany, from 1925 to 1928;
and then was active as a painter, photographer, graphic designer
and exhibition architect in Berlin from 1928 to 1938; and
WHEREAS, Herbert Bayer moved to New York in 1938, where he
designed the exhibition and edited the book "Bauhaus 1919-1928"
for the Museum of Modern Art and served as a designer and design
consultant for a number of corporations; and
WHEREAS, Herbert Bayer, with his wife Joella, moved to Aspen,
Colorado, in 1946, to work with Walter PaeDcke and Robert O.
Anderson and the Aspen Institute for Humanistic Studies in enrich-
ing the cultural life of the City and resided in the City of As~en
until 1975; and
WHEREAS, Herbert Bayer designed many buildings for the Aspen
Institute, including the distinctive Aspen Music Festival Amphi-
theater and made various other cultural~ artistic and educational
contributions to the City of Aspen. The Bayer designed buildings
at the Institute and the Meadows loom as one of the lasting testa-
ments to Bauhaus design in the United States; and
WHEREAS, during his lifetime and during his residency in the
City of Aspen, Herbert Bayer achieved success as a highly accom-
plished painter, sculptor, architect and graphic engineer. In
addition to his works in the City of Aspen, he is acknowledged as
the sculptor for the "Articulated Wall" in the Denver Design Cen-
art works which are on display at the Denver Art
ter, and many
Museum; and
WHEREAS,
during his residency in Aspen, Herbert Bayer incal-
culably enriched the City and the lives of its inhabitants and
visitors.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE
CITY OF ASPEN, COLORADO:
Section 1
The City Council does hereby express its sympathy at the
death of its long-time friend, creative citizen and resident and
hereby commemorates Herbert Bayer's life as a highly accomplished
painter, sculptor, architect and graphic designer, who incalcul-
ably enriched the cultural, artistic, architectural and educa-
tional life of the community and those with whom he came in con-
tact.
