HomeMy WebLinkAboutresolution.council.018-83RECORD OF PROCEEDINGS 100 Leaves RESOLUTION NO. /$ (Series of 19~3) WHEREAS, the Ashcroft area at the head of the Castle Creek Valley is the site of heavily-used recreational and historic sites, and wHEREAS, the Ashcroft area is adjacent to Congressionally- designated wilderness AreaS and provides, in conjunction with those areas, important wildlife habitat, watershed protection, scenic areas and primitive recreational opportunities, and WHEREAS, the valueS and uses of the Ashcroft area are threatened by possible future development of private lands in the area, and WHEREAS, the U.S. Forest Service has demonstrated its commit- ment to the preservation of the Ashcroft area and to publc acqui- sition of private lands in the Ashcroft area through its purchase, in 1981, of 784.24 acreS, encompassing the Ashcroft Ghost Town site, at a cost of $1,345,400.00, and WHEREAS, the citizens of the City of Aspen and Pitkin County have demonstrated their support for preservation of the Ashcroft area through their ongoing support of historic preservation acti- vities, wilderneSS designations, and low-impact recreational development in the area, and WHEREAS, the U.S. Forest Service, with the assistance of the Nature Conservancy, has arranged an exchange of critical private lands in the Ashcroft area for lands of equal appraised value elsewhere in the state, and WHEREAS, that exchange has been approved by the U.S. Forest Service and now awaits final Congressional clearance. RECORD OF PROCEEDINGS 100 Leaves NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF ASPEN, COLORADO: Section 1 That the City our Congressional representatives to Exchange as proposed without delay.
