TO THE PROPOSED BERGSL~N BUILDII~G A~D ITS INCOMPATIBILITY WITH
THE PROPOSED ASPEN HISTORIC DISTRICT.

responsible for the establishment and development of the
proposed Aspen Ristoric District in order to preserve those
buildings and sites which reflect the origLn, character, and
heritage of the City, and
WHEREAS, the Aspen Historic Preservation Committee is
responsible for the review of new construction's compatibility
within the proposed Historic District, and
W~EREAS, ~e proposed Bergman Building is located in th~
Historic District on the block facing Main Street between
Mill Street ~6 Monarch Street where most of the existing
buildings incI~ing the Hotel Jerome are historic structures,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, THAT THE ASPEN HISTORIC
PRESERVATION C(}~MITTEE HAS DETERMINED THE BERGMAN BUILDING
TO BE INCONS'I~T~NT WITH THE NEARBY HISTORIC STRUCTURES BASED
ON T~: FOLLOWI~G POINTS:
1. The b=ilding size overpowers, detracts and is
generally inconsistent with the adjacent regularly
space~ structures to the west;
2. The si~e and rear facades of painted concrete block
a~e n&~t compatible with existing building materials
in the immediate area;
3. The i~Crea~ed size of the structure at the rear
has a %ootentially important visual impact on
smaller structures as viewed from ~opkins and Mill
Streets;
The L~rge windows on the
with ~.he smaller windows
front facade are inconsistent
in adjacent structures;
There is concern that the large windows will allow
interior flourescent lighting to create a lighting
effe~t on Main Street which in inconsistent with
the f~esired night character of the Historic District.
6. Signing, which ls an impertant visual element on the
street, particularly in a Historic District, has not
been presented;
7. Material and colors have not been clearly presented
to the Aspen Historic Preservation Committee;
8. Agreements on the preservation of existing trees
and/or their placement in the event of damage should
