A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF ASPEN, COLORADO
SUPPORTING THE PITKIN COUNTY COMMISSIONER MICK IRELAND AND
SUPPORTiNG THE TRADITIONAL DEMOCRATIC ELECTION PROCESS
WHEREAS, Mick Ireland has faithfully served to fulfill the duties of his office for
many years, and has contributed greatly to maintaining the quality of life in Pitkin
County, both as a commissioner and as a private citizen, and
WHEREAS, Mick Ireland has consistently worked to represent and advance the
interests of those who twice elected him in regularly scheduled November elections, in
addition to maintaining popular public support through both a failed recall petition
process and a failed recall vote during his time in office, and
WHEREAS, Mick Ireland has long championed traditional Pitkin County values and
the needs of our residents by protecting the environment, supporting mass transit,
improving Highway 82, building affordable housing, and enhancing our community
character, and
WHEREAS, the Aspen City Council, individually and collectively, may not have
always agreed with the positions taken by Commissioner Ireland on any given issue,
however, we acknowledge the research, hard work, and thoughtfulness that he has
brought to bear on our discussions and to his decision making, and
WHEREAS, each of us were duly elected by the .democratic process in elections
where we all expressed our different views on a plethora of community issues, and were
elected by the public in spite of or because of those views, and
NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE
CITY OF ASPEN, THAT;
Section One
We urge the citizens of Aspen and Pitldn County to consider the community good
and to avoid the divisive and destructive politics of recall campaigns, and that those who
do not agree with governmental decisions express their views through the process of
regularly scheduled primaries, November elections and municipal May elections when
full and fair debate of all the issues can occur - or through the referendum process- as
these are the proper recourses for citizens in a healthy democratic republic,
Section Two
We respectfully urge a No vote on the recall of Pitkin County Commissioner Mick
Ireland should the matter advance to a public vote.
