HomeMy WebLinkAboutresolution.apz.002-88 RESOLUTION OF THE ASPEN PLANNING AND ZONING COMMISSION SUPPORTING THE DEVELOPMENT OF PASSENGER RAIL SERVICE TO THE ROARING FORK VATW~Y Resolution No. 88- ~ WHEREAS, the City of Aspen has historically supported the concept of passenger rail service into Aspen and the Roaring Fork Valley; and WHEREAS, that support has been expressed in the form of acquisition of the Denver and Rio Grande right-of-way and terminal site in the City of Aspen; and WR-EREAS, that support has further been expressed in the form of studies of light-rail as an alternative public transport method in the Upper Valley; and WHEREAS, the City of Aspen supports the development of passenger rail service to the Valley as an essential element in the mix of available transportation choices to the destination resorts of Aspen and Snowmass; and WHEREAS, the City of Aspen believes that passenger rail service to the Roaring Fork Valley is an essential element in reducing automobile congestion and traffic hazards on State Highway 82; and WHEREAS, the citizens of Pitkin County demonstrated their overwhelming support for passenger rail service in a 1985 referendum endorsing the concept of passenger rail service to be provided by the Roaring Fork Railroad, Inc.; and WHEREAS, the Aspen Planning and Zoning Commission urges the Denver and Rio Grande to work with potential passenger rail Resolution No. 88- ~ Page 2 service providers in an effort to bring passenger rail service to the Roaring Fork Valley. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Aspen Planning and Zoning Commission that it supports passenger rail service to the Roaring Fork Valley and the City of Aspen.
