COMMISSION ON THE DESIGN OF 'r~ FOUR LANE REPLACEMENT
BRIDGE OVER MAROON CREEK
ASPEN PLANNING AND ZONING COMMISSION RESOLUTION NO. 90-~
PITKIN PLANNING AND ZONING COMMISSION RESOLUTION NO. PZ-90-
WHEREAS, joint meetings of the Aspen Planning and Zoning
Commission and the Pitkin County Planning and Zoning Commission
were held on August 28 and September 25, 1990 to discuss design
issues surrounding the four lane replacement bridge over Maroon
Creek;
W~_~KEAS, at the meeting on August 28, 1990 the Colorado
Department of Highways (hereinafter, "CDOH") made a presentation
regarding the selection process for the designs being presented,
steel slant leg and steel box girder;
WHEREAS, the CDOH informed the Planning and Zoning
Commissions that funding for the bridge replacement comes from
State sources and must be allocated in the near future;
WHEREAS, the Planning and Zoning Commissions discussed the
issue of the replacement bridge and had two major areas of
concern: alignment of the new bridge and timing of the bridge
design and highway design; and
WHEREAS, the Planning and Zoning Commissions found that it
was impossible to design the Maroon Creek bridge without
understanding the design of the roadway at either end of the
bridge, and in fact the Commissions felt designing the bridge
before the highway design was established was
the "cart before the horse".
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED
and Zoning Commission and the Pitkin
Commission that:

County Planning and Zoning
Any new bridge should be designed so that it uses the
current highway alignment.
The design of the new four lane bridge and the four
lane highway should be undertaken concurrently to
ensure the best design for the Community.
