ASPEN PLANNING COMMISSION
POST OFFICE PROPOSAL RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, the Aspen Planning Commission has studied
the proposal for an enlarged central post office as presented
by the U.S.P.S. District Office, and
~HEREAS, public buildings determine patterns of
development which substantially affect the overall quality of
a community, and
WHEREAS, said proposal provides a concept of postal
service with a degree of inflexibility that removes options for
future choices, and
WHEREAS, the Planning Commission supports the
general concept of neighborhood service areas to reduce circu-
lation problems, and the proposal for an enlarged central post
office is not in keeping with the policy for reducing automobile
traffic in the central core area, and
WHEREAS, the neighborhood service concept is an
important element in maintaining the character of Aspen as a
special place and this character is essential for the recreation
economy upon which the community depends, and
WHEREAS, Aspen residents have been surveyed to
determine postal service and facility preference, and the results
of that survey reflect the community facilities section of the
Aspen Area General Plan which recognizes
branch post offices, and
WHEREAS, the proposal,

NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Aspen Plan-
ning Commission recommends a rejection of the proposal for an
enlarged central post office contained in the letter dated May 1,
1972 from the District Engineer of the District Office, Colorado
Springs,
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that U.S.P.S. representa-
tives be requested to meet with the Aspen City Council and Plan-
ning Commission to reevaluate the concept of postal service pro-
posed to be provided for the community.
