N r 9 DE ELEVATION (5007-Hh FTZONT--ELEVATCON ( wast A /00.- Ar /0,/a,81 09£4 92 6 11 t.42 5,17 ifl9+21 46 MEMORANDUM TO: Historic Preservation Committee FROM: Welton Anderson, Architect RE: Amendment to Brand Building HPC Approval DATE: 27 October 1987 Introduction: The latest change to the Brand Building Annex comes as a result of a change in ownership of the adjoining property. The new owner plans not to build anything for the next few years but to allow the Smuggler Land Office restaurant to continue to use part of the vacant lot for outdoor dining and to put a sculpture garden in the remainder of the property. Their Architect first proposed to put up a10 foot wall along their property line 4-feet west of the annex to hide the annex. This would create an intolerable access problem for the Brand Building. After several discussions with them, their Architect suggested continuing the brown stucco finish found on the 2-story west wall of the Smuggler onto the one-story annex's west wall. Since. the new stair enclosure was approved by HPC with a stucco finish and the annex's west wall is a mix of cinder block and badly deteriorated common brick, we agreed to take that proposal forward. Description of Development Activity: The common brick and masonry block walls of the annex would receive a sand finish stucco matching in color and texture bf tfie 2-story west -wall of the Smuggler wing. Additional change to prior HPC approvals are that the motorized skylight removal from the upper roof will be resued on the roof of the annex over the gym. Also a door will be placed in an existing window opening on the west wall of the second floor (adjacent to and partly under the fire escape) to an uncovered redwood roof deck on the roof of the annex. This deck will be partially screened with a wood lattice screen. Effect of Proposal on Original Structure: This proposal has negligable impact on the Original Brand Building for two reasons. First, the annex was not part of the original Brand Building. It was a cheaply built addition donstructed in the 1930's of poor quality brick and cinder block. It was the body and paint shop for a Buick and Dodge dealership and thus has considerably less historical significant than the 1891 Brand Building. Second, is its location. The stucco is an interim solution to improve the ragged appearance of the back of the Brand Building while it is being used for outdoor dining/sculpture garden.
