March 31, 1987

Nick Pasquarella, Zoe Compton, Charles Cunniffe, Bill Poss, Mary
Martin and Charlie Knight present. Absent were Patricia O'Bryan
and Marge Riley.
MOUNTAINEER SECOND FLOOR EXPANSION
Public Hearing: Final Review
Graeme Means, architect, brought a drawing for the Committee to
review. The second gable was eliminated. The architects
eliminated the false gable and came up with a different treatment
for the front facade. Graeme stated that a kickplate 18 inches
high will be used, 1 by 3 vertical tongue/groove siding, wood
frame, windows, and wood doors with glass lights and beveled
siding. The area in the gable was treated similar to the
victorian era. Solid wood trim, with glass designs at the peak
of the gable and there is about a 2 1/2 foot round lower leaf
carved pannel. This pannel will probably be painted and the
scene would be an abstract mountain scene. The second floor top
of the railing will be a 1 by 3~.abou~ 8 inches high. There is an
existing sign in the south eleva~i~%
Georgeann asked what was on the further back wall.
Graeme stated that the same siding would be used.
Mary Martin stated the diagram on paper looks different from the
model.
Graeme stated a parapet is required for a fire barrier for the
adjacent building.
Georgeann stated that she viewed the building and feels that
there would not be an impact from the parapet wall.
Georgeann stated she felt the design is a far improvement.
Steve Burstein, Planning Office, stated he felt the new design
was an improvement also and likes the mountain motif idea.
Georgeann stated the little carved relief may not b~ ~ in
with the building code; if it is over 18 inches high it gets
involved with the sign code.
Graeme stated that he read the sign code carefully and feels it
does not qualify as a sign but as a graphic design and a permit
is not required if it is under 10 square feet.
Charles Knight stated he had a question on the area that is not
decorated.
Graeme stated that there is an adjacent building in the area of
concern one foot away and there will be a finish on that side.
Charles Knight stated that there is much more continuity in the
building now. It now offers light and openness.
Nick Pasquaella stated it is a fine example of a joint compro-
mise.
Georgeann stated that she has a concern with the horizontal band
of tongue and groove across the bottom. She asked if the
Committee was comfortable with the band.
Graeme stated that the design stands out more on the drawing than
it would in actuality. Graeme stated that the ban was put there
for protection from the snow machines.
Georgeann opened the public hearing.
Georgeann closed the public hearing.
Nick Pasquarella made the motion to approve the presentation for
final review. Mary Martin second the motion. All favored.
Motion carries.
Meeting adjourned at 3:00 p.m.
