Special Meeting
July 2, 1985
1:00 P.M.
City Council Chambers
MINUTES:
The East side will be seen from the street, and in the other
meeting they explained that in fact, there will be a consistency
in patterns and illustrations from the old house to the new.
The materials will be a brick,(they will be cleaning the brick of
the old house) and they will match the new and old brick as
closely as possible. The old brick was made here in Aspen, the
general color will be matched.
The singles will be the other material that you will see, and the
shingles will have patterns in them, that relate to the old
house. The shingles have a chopped corner, they look like scallop
from a distance, but that they have a 45 o cut on every corner.
and relates to the house itself in the front of the building is
cut off at a 45 degree angle.
The design was not intended to duplicate the orginal house but to
blend in as closely as they can , borrowing parts from the old house
reassembling them, using shapes that were used in the orginal
house, and using protions that are the same.
Nick Pasquarella...what about the roof line in the attic, was
there going to be a sky light?
Harry Teague the plan is not to have sky lights, the lights will
come through the room by the little windows on the ends.
There has been some restoration to the front porch, replacing
parts that were rotten, but there is no change.
Marge Riley...are the trees still staying?
Teague Yes, there are the trees in the front and smaller trees on
the side and landscaping of fruit trees also.

MINUTES:
Teague the orginal house the singles have been painted, but they
are not sure what choice of color they wish to use, they will do
a color chip sample and go back to the orginal colors, that does
not mean the orginal color that was used first, but what is best
for the house, and will come back to HPC will a choice is made.
Mary Martin ...wants the color as close to the orginal history
and not an orginal statement
Teague the singles and the trim and the gables ends will be painted.
The roof itself is singles and it has been treated with a black
kind graphite mix,and it will look the same.
Bill Drueding ...for the record that the maximum hieght for the
area for that zone is twenty five feet, and there is a roof line
in the old house that will require a Board of a Adjustment variance.
Also the location of the swimming pool will require a variance.
Dan Deleno suggested to the members that he wish to request a
resolution to recommend to the Board of Adjustment on the placement
of the swimming pool stating that there is no other place on the
lot except in public view to place the swimming pool, and would
distract from the historic character if placed where the footage
was more available, there is a required yard space of 15 foot on
that side of the building.
Tom Sardy had a non conformity, of a covered porch on that side of
the house, and it would be a trade off situation with the request
for the pool.
Public Hearing closed:
Marge Riley moved to approve the final design for the Sardy House
at 128 E. Main the orginal house and the new addition as presented

today. Seconded by Connie Mc Crudden, all in favor, motion carried.
Bill Drueding asked to be more pacific on the resolution to the
Board of Adjustment, from HPC members, that the model shown today
is the same and is not higher than the request of the variance of
a seven foot six inch height , being asked for. The new addition
meaning the area attached to the old house where the mortuary was
is the placement of the higher height requested.
Dan Deleno said it will be the roof line running north south
continuting north from the exsisting house, and extending to the
vacate alley.
Dan Deleno said he agrees will Bill Drueding and states as the
plans were presented today before HPC so there can be no change,
or raise any of the other heights.
Georgeann Waggaman moved to approve the resolution to give to the
Board of Adjustment.
That HPC recommends to the Board of Adjustment,
of the variance necessary to implement the plans for the Sardy
House as they shown today and in the drawings stamped with
HPC approval.
Nick Pasquarella seconded, all in favor, motion carried.

MINUTES:
The building was known as the First National Bank Building in
1888, in the 1920's there area that now houses St. Johns was
turned into an automoble dealer ship, then it became a gas station.
Baldwin brought the building in 1970 and went through a varity of
make shift renaissance.
The plan is to give it a unify facade, except for where Smuggler
Land Company is, with recess double doors, and show windows on
each side. Something like the Aspen Block Building has become.
Inside: will be changed , they will take all the pipes out of the
ceiling and the space heaters that hang from the ceiling, and
open it up to be used for one or two spaces.
Poppy Cocks will have three french doors two that will open in the
summer and one to be used in the winter and will have street
frontage.
The other idea is to use awnings in the front of the building.there
is a barrel awning on one part of the building.
Anderson is working under the guide lines of the state Preservation
Office, and their standards are pretty rigid.
Welton Anderson has been asked to do only the ground floor,
the second floor and roof, he is not handling. The board and the
building department are interested in the building as a whole
project.
Harley Baldwin needs to be notified and asked to come before HPC
and tell what he intends to do with the building as a whole.
Plans of these can be seen in the Planning office.

Preliminary Review of awnings on the Aspen Rod and Gun Shop
in the Apen Grove Building, 519 W. Copper.
Charles Cunniffee is asking for preliminary and final review.
These is right by the stairs, the first shop. The want a one peice
awning over the door and window area, about 13 by 3 feet and
retractable.
The members said they needed a site visit before making a decision
on such a request. There are other business there and right off
can not think if there are other awnings on the other places.
HPC prefers the same type of awnings on a building and colors.
Guarrd Mosses: Sign on the Brand Building
Harley Baldwin would like to see a sign done but one that has
more charm and interest to it than the one of 1940.
Patriotic Sons of America, Smuggler Mine Company, could be some
of the themes. Guarrd would come back to the committee when he
has a better idea of design, it would have to be a non commerical
sign to stay out of the sign code requirements, a peice of
Graphic Art.
Perhaps the graphic art if the committee has the Patriotic Sons of
America theme it would be ribbons eagles swirls banners.
Other themes Brand Dance Hall, First National Bank, Smuggler
Mining Company, Hyman Block.
Guarrd will come back to the committee when he has more done on
paper.
