Historic Preservation Committee Special Meeting
Sorensen
Danish
An~ik's
734 W.
Main St.
On May 10th, Mary Webster, part owner of the Sorensen's Danish
An~iks at 734 W.Main Street, called Connie Mc Crudden to say that
she had just spoken to Bill Drueding about painting their shop.
She called Bill because with everything they had done to the house
previous years, they had to get permission from the building inspector.
Bill informed her that "No, she did not have to go through his
department, but that she would have to go through HPC." He
informed her, how ~ver that Colette was out of town, and that
she would have to wait for her return. Mary then asked for a list
of the HPC members, and picked Connie name to call. She felt very
frustrated about having to wait 3-4 weeks to paint as both she and Liz
were to be in Europe on a buying trip then. They also had a
lined up a painter for the following Monday and definitey wanted
to get started if at all possible, so that the house would look
fresh for the beginning of the coming season. I told her that I
would check with Bill Drueding and Pam to see what procedure
I could follow. Neither one of them saw any problem with calling
a special meeting, as long as we had a quoram.
Connie proceeded to reach all HPC members in the next couple
of days but could find no one at home except Terry End, Mona Frost,
and Gretchen Greenwood. This made a total of four counting
Connie, and she presented Mary's plan to the members over the phone.
Gretchen was the only one out of the four of us who did not like the
idea of the house being painted white. She felt that it was "too
strong of a statement for that corner." Terry and Mona were
receptive for the white color and the blue trim over the phone,
but felt that we should meet at the house and discuss the blue
trim and see the color.
After much more phoning, trying to get other members to come, ended
up with just the three of us meeting Mary Webster at the Danish
Antiks on Saturday May 12 at 4 pm. Mary had a color rendering
showing all the trim details. Mona and Terry both felt that the
detailed painting of the fish scales was going to be too "busy"
so we decided that we would give our okay on painting the house
white with blue trim, but would come back for another "on site"
look when they started painting the fish scales.
Since CoNnie had been able to reach Gretchen on the first call,
but could not get her get her again to inform her of the site
meeting, Connie said she felt that Gretchen was aware of what
was being voted on here, so just assumed she would of voted against
the white paint, so therefore we had a 3 out of 4 vote for the
new white paint job.
By about the 21st of May we met again to look at the blue and white
fish scales,. Again I had tried to get hold of all the members,
but this time found Nick Pasquarella to join the 3 of us who had
orginally voted.
After seeing the application of the blue and white paint on the fish
scales, everyone agreed they liked it. There was criticism of the
application of the blue paint on the porch rails posts and the larger
porch roof support posts. Also of the blue floor of the porch.
Mary W~sterexplained that because of the endless traffic on the
corner, the dirt problem was always severe and said that the blue floor
would not show the dirt. After much discussion of which rung should
or should not be blue, it was finnaly voted on to paint the smaller
rungs on the porch rail posts blue, but to leave the larger roof support
posts completely white.
On May 27th Mary Webster called Connie at her office to say that she
really did not like the larger posts on the porch all white as it
seemed to lift your eyes right up to the top of the house instead
of keeping a focus on the porch and entry, and would Connie
mind trying to get hold of everyone again and having them
drive by to see how she had had the posts painted. If they really
still did not like it she would paint them all out white as soon
as she returned from Europe.
Being the Memorial Day weekend Connie said she could not get hold
of any one and she had to be in Denver the next week.
Connie went on to say that she personnally felt that the way
they ware painted now looks quite nice and and observing many other
posts on similar porches throughtout the town, the small rungs are
usually painted a contrasting color.
Connie said she would like to add for the record, that when concerned
business people and residence owners, are feeling obligated to
improve their properties, spend thousands of dollars in doing so,
because they have pride in these building and pride in what they are
selling, she feels that this committee's nortorius "knit-picking"
over minute details is ridiculous and embarassing.
Please, lets re evalute what we are trying really to do.
Taken from a memo from Connie Mc Crudden for the record for
the happenings of this project and what transpired.
