NUGGET
LODGE
Old Business: Preliminary review of the facade changes at the Nugget
Lodge, with Dave Gibson and Augie Reno.
Dave Gibson put 5 site plans on the wall for the members to see;
Explaining to the members this is a revised plan from the meeting of
June 12th, the drawings show a major cosmetic exterior facelift, and
some landscaping; From the suggestion that HPC mention from the
last meeting and the site visit that followed, he has tried to
incorporate those ideas into the design that is before HPC today.
The plan is to put a new skin on all the walls of the building and
new colors, they wish to go from the black and white to a lite gray,
and softening the exterior walls. One of the areas with a lot of
revision is the corner area or entrance, now they wish it to be
a 5 sided shape that turns the corner in segments; The planters
in front of the entrance on the corner are three feet high and made
of stone. Another change will be, instead of the continuious sweep
of glass, the glass has been recessed 16 inches, and some of the massive
peirs have been taken out, this will shade the glass and with the door
recessed will created a wheather protected area;
One comment from the last meeting was to have more detailing, and
Dave said they have come up with the idea, like at the Applejack
where they put above the fireplace with a lime stone carving, this
is the kind of thing they would like to try to do on the front
entrance of the Nugget Lodge, to use a artifact over the door, and
to use some columns, if they don't find the columns they are looking
for then they wish to use a new wood column lacqer to match the
color scheme. Some color is trying to be worked into the gray scheme,
and the awnings bring some color in, along Garmish; The color is
alos picked up in the wood strip, that is one foot wide, this would
be an accent that would be betwwen a rose and burgundy, but the
choice of awnings can be discussed; Dave went on to say that a gray
understated building need an accent, the difference will be depending
on the chioce of terra cotta or limestone artifact they use.
The change in the south elevation, raising the glass up 16 inches,
and they went from a glass greenhouse type roof, to a dark gray
metal roof that will match the gray, there will be a little more wood
and less glass.
Nick Pasquarella asked what kind of stone would they be using?
Dave said a flat moss rock.
Zoe Compton said that the color combination was very nice if the
gray stayed lite as it is now.
Gretchen Greenwood asked if they could not find any terra cotta
or the limestone that could be used, how would that change the plans?
Dave replied that when looking for the artifact for the Applejack,
there seemed to be enough, and felt he should be able to find
something.
Gretchen said she had some problems with the west elevation, that
the facade looks very stark naked, and she would like to see more
detail there.
Georgeann said that perhaps a window on the second floor would help,
-2-
to give you a vertical feeling, just by putting a window there.
Colette Penne asked the members their thoughts, if the gray stayed
lite, the second question would be , the terra cotta artifact or
what ever it turns out to be over the entrance is a nice idea, it
defines the entrance, the columns are another question, columns
are such a strong statement,as an architectial element they
look more attached than just for the entrance, she went on to say
that she did like columns on the old buildings that should have
columns, but said even the Tom Thumb building where they are less
attached there do not come off very well, and wonder how the other
members felt.
Nick Pasquarella said that he thought the columns denoted entrances.
Colette stated that this is a very contemporiary look here, and the
columns are a very old element, if it is just the panel
that is a decorative element it seems effective, this is her
personnel opinion.
Connie Mc Crudden said she agreed with Colette.
Gretchen said she felt that the columns were good, and the terra cotta
will not come across as an old peice, and could stand there by itself,
but the columns will define the entry a little more, and make
the entrances look special.
Zoe said that if the columns lend with the peice chosen over the
entry, then it would fit, but if there is to much contrast between the
columns and the artifact then that would change things.
Colette said that Nicks and Gretchen thoughts on defining the entrance
finishes the entrance off, is fine, but when the entrances is there
on the corner, it is a very strong vocal point, and she feels it is
defined by the design of the building itself, and does not feel
it really has to be stress to the point of having columns,on this
type of building that is in a historic district.
Georgeann said the one thing that struck her ,was when Dave mention
columns, that the tow column members would be somewhat more detailed
as wooden elements, not a column, but not a plain simple unarticulated
surface that they have on the house. That might give them
more detailing that Gretchen feels is needed, it would not be as formal
as or entering a new element as a real column would but it would
define the door way some.
Also one of the things that make an old victorian striking is
they always finish the top of the building with some kind of
articulationm and Georgeann suggested that perhaps this could be
done on this building, could the top 4 or6 inches of wood or
something be changed?
Gretchen asked about the columns that were on the south face, and
were they made of metal?
Dave said they were existing columns, and they are metal and structual
steel;
Gretchen asked if those columns needed to be covered up,building code
wise, and was the columns Dave is talking about, would they be wooden
columns, with those wood sections?
Dave replied that would be a fall back situation, if they could
find some real stone or some old turn columns, they would use that first.
Gretchen said she felt the metal columns should be addressed and
incorporated and carried through.
Zoe asked what the doors were made of in the entry way.
Dave stated that they were a
bronze to match the windows.

Historic Preservation cont. p.3. June 26, 1984
Zoe said that since this will be going to public hearing, and
with some thoughts that HPC has given them, that when they come back
with a more definite detailing in terms of color and the furbish
elements they plan to usem and the availability there is.
Mary Martin said she like the effect of the bank at Snowmass,
and it was very nice looking, and could the columns be black poles?
Dave said that that was not the feeling they wish to go for.
Georgeann said that the detailing that she spoke of earlier, was
not victorian but rather contemporiary detailing, she would like to see.
Gretchen moved to approve the Nugget Lodge for preliminary review
as presented today on the revised remodel by Dave Gibson, with
the following conditions to be shown at the Public Hearing,
and that is to incorporate the HPC members suggestions that the
detailing at the very top of the parafit be addressed, and more
consideration on the post, and enclosing the post of the south
elevation, to the west elevation the blank area, to add something
there to be considered, a third condishion to be to add a window
or detailing to break up the facade and to fill out the
west elevation, and to bring peices or samples that they will
use, and photo's and the choice of colors; Nick Pasquarella
seconded the motion, all in favor, motion carried.
Discussion:
Zoe Compton mentioned that she would like to see two renderings
with views of the plans with trees and with out trees, and that
the rendering show for example, one being, with the top peice
like they have it now, and the other with the detailing;
Gideon Kaufman attorney for the applicate said that there are three or
four suggestions that HPC has made, that it might be helpful for the
applicate to show HPC members all four suggestions together, or
if that is a little to much, maybe what should be done'is to have two
sets, one with two or three suggestions and one with the four.
Colette said that if HPC held the meeting the 2nd and the fourth
Tuesday in July, this would not give enough time for publishing,
and since there is five weeks would the members mind changing to
the 17th and the 31st, all members were in agreement.
New Business:
Consideration of awnings for the Aspen Laundry Building, with
Barb Schey and Dick Flecher giving the presentation.
The Aspen Laundry building is located at 301 E. Hopkins, this
building get a lot of sun around 3~o'clock and the request would be
like you see at the Baggage Claim in style and color.
The members felt that the building was an odd color, sort of a
beige in tone.
Georgeann ~gammn asked what style of awning they planned to use?
Dick replied very standard, and the same as the Baggage Claim,
and the same fabric; There will be fabric on the end and very
tastefully done with the signage of US Capitol, and that will be done
in gold lettering since blue and gold are there corporate colors.
The size of lettering should be checked with the building department
for correct size, it was mention to the applicate.
-4-
Larry Brooks had Zoe Compton do some consulting work for him,
and at that time asked for two of the antique light poles to be
placed there, which are to be a forest green.
Bill Drueding reminded the applicate that the awnings to have to
be retractable.
Zoe asked if they have considered a dark green color for there
awning?
Garrd Moses has done the gold leaf in the window for them, and is
lined in the same color of blue, as the color requested for there
awning.
The members felt that the other store owners should be considered
in the choice of color this applicate wishes, at least informed of
the choice of the applicate request, even if it is just this
business applying for the awnings.
Colette brought up that the continunity of the building needs to be
the same, the same type and color of awnings need to be there.
Zoe Compton mentioned in talking with Larry Phillips, one of
his main objections, when he did that building, there were a lot
of different colors on the building, and the only thing he wanted with
the building was to have it blend and be soft; She went on to say
that if you put a royal blue up there and don't get some
sort of an agreement with the other tenants, then it could be a mess,
The browns would look good with the brick.
Nick said that perhaps they could consider another color besides
the blue, but how far HPC should go except to give a recommendation
he was not sure of, but the building looks so much better than it has
in the past.
Colette reminded the group that HPC can go as far as it wants with
color, that is why the members are here, if HPC is not going to say
what they think, that that, is not a good color, and if HPC
would say to the applicate, they want them to reconsider, then
thats the way it should be; The reason HPC reviews awnings they can
greatly change the architecture facadem and the color and the signage
can make a big difference also.
Gretchen agreed, with the idea of awnings for the building, but the
choice of color being blue, no.
Colette mention the awnings by the Ute, that are at the Aspen Arcade
that are brown and tan awnings, and something like that would not
conflict, as the blue would with the building or the street lights,
and would keep out the sun in. the afternoon.
Zoe said what ever color of awning is chossen it should blend,
and should not be contrasting, in this case the browns with the
terra cotta probably would be good, even a brown and beige stripes.
Mary Martin said thin, she felt that the owners on both sides of
the request awnings should be notified, of the applicates wishes,
one owner might like the stripes, the other the blue.
Georgeann reminded the members that one person, and one business
is comming before HPC today, and with the motion that grants this one
the consideration, the other business if they wish to have
awnings must have the same in style and color.
Zoe Compton moved to approve one of the samples of brown shown to
the members, the dark brown; Nick Pasquarella seconded the motion,
discussion:
Colette asked if the members were giving the applicate a choice
of going to a solid if they want to,so long as it was in the
brown tones;

Zoe said she would have them use the stripes.
Georgeann said that she would like to have a motion for the choice
of blue awnings, and then have the appticate come back with another
suggestion.
Nick Pasquaretla moved to oppossed the blue awnings, second by
Zoe Compton, all in favor, motion carries.
Connie siad that she thought the stripes have to much gray in the
lighter tones.
The applicate said that the dark brown they could live with if HPC
would approve that.
Colette said that if the owner ~ going to paint it the trim, then
a plain awning might be better.
Connie Mc Crudden moved to approve the choice of the dark brown,
a walnut brown 1118 with the signage of US Capitol on the
wnaings in gold letter, the awning will be stright,Nick Pasquarella
second the motion, all in favor, motion carried.
Georgeann Waggaman said she would like to have some work sessions,
and perhaps two or three informal meetings, Connie said she would like
the first meeting to be held at her home July 10th at 7:oo P.M.
Nick Pasquarella said he would like the meeting with John Stanford
at his place, when that one is set up, the members were asked if
they wish to talk about something to have a short report ready for
the other memebrs to hear at that time. Also considerations for
a budget should be discussed.
Gretchen moved to adjourn the meeting at 2:25 P.M.
