Historic Preservation Committee regular meeting November 13, 1984 Conference Room
Present Georgeann Waggaman, Mona Frost, Nick Pasquarella, Connie Mc Crudden,
Gretchen Greenwood, Zoe Compton, Colette Penne, excused Majorie Riley.
Mona Frost asked to review the packet in short, because she will
need to leave the meeting early.
Georgeann opened the meeting.
The new regular member appointed by City Council will be
Pat O'Brian.
Comments for the agenda items- Mona Frost.
Hotel Jerome: So long as the greenhouse is in the center of the
building off the dinning room, she agrees with the concept.
If the white paint with the blue can come off and the orginal
color restored to the brick.
Awning request:Mill St. Plaza- Benetton, was fine.
Some of the members stated that Mona might change
if she listen to the other members comments.
her opinion,
Designation of Structures:
126 E. Bleeker, she has been in this house and is very much in
favor of designation, 123 E. Hallam feels this house has been a part
of Aspen history, and should be disignated.
Mona...was glad of her reinstatement to HPC.
The City is losing the big Cotton woods with out enough water and
care, and she would like more ditches where ever it is possible to
put them, because these tree are important part of Aspen History.
AS much as the historical sites and buildings of the town.
The Chitwood Building needs to have something done especially
to the Mill Street side, this is a disgrace to the City of Aspen,
the historic sites, and is one of the oldest building in town.
Hans Gra~igers plans of a restaurant on Aspen Mountain.
Mona is oppossed.
From the peaks where they wish to put the building, from the right
angle on the top of Aspen Mountain it looks like the form of
a lady lying down and is called the Silver Queen or the Ute
Indian Maiden. If the top is taken off Graimiger will be taking the
head and face off the silver Queen, and that is more historic
than another Aspen restaurant. Once it is blasted away there
is no replacing or repairing it.
Mona Frost was excused from the meeting.
Report on the signage at Danish Antiks: Colette Penne
Colette... receiving an up date on the memo from Bill Drueding,
stating that Mary Webster has removed the following: the signs that
do not have permits for placement, two walls signs over the window
frames. The two Danish Antiks parking signs are reduced to a
reasonible size and don't advertized Danish Antik's. The
sign that said "Pine" has been removed, the sign that said
"Pine" has been removed, the sign that said "Antiques" is an
old sign and will stay, the sign by the front door Bill said he does
not have a problem with.., there has been an effort to cut down the
signage.
Hotel Jerome: Perry Harvey... this is a phrasing remodel with the
addition and phrase I undertaken in 1985. It will complete
renovate the existing building. And asks for approval of a greenhouse
structure, where the existing patio has been, off the double doors
of the dinning room. It will be 48 feet back from the front
corner of the building, and wilt~be 29 f~e% ~by~20 feet bY 16
feet tall and connected to the building by a five foot wide
and four foot deep glass enclosed walk way.
The Hotel Jerome has preliminary designation from the National
Registry.
The row of small wooden stores are comming off and the hotel
will open up the windows behind the lobby in the ballroom.
Georgeann...HPC wants the two facades that looks out on the street
in first class condition, and the town needs this.
The hotel has tried in places to remove the paint, and it has
two or three treatments. THe goal is to take it down to the
brick and paint the trim, there is some concern that it will be
blotchy with areas where the brick is different. The test samples
show that differnet brick has been used of the building.
Georgeann... Would like to see the problem with the exterior on the
main part of the building solved before the greenhouse effect
is done.
Colette... the Hotel Jerome will be a phrased project, rather
than the whole bid addition, you will see the building restored and
cleaned up. This is the plan.
Perry Harvey... the hope is to start this winter and open by
next Thanksgiving
Materials: the type of glass will be determined later, there will
be an aluminmum bracing system between the glass and the wooden
doors, that can be painted so that it blends in with the rest of the
Jerome, the design will be close to the period as possible.
But the materials will be contemporiary.
This will need to go to Public Hearing, the materials will stay
undecided til the facade clean up, but the approval will be
given to the structure. ~
Gretchen Greenwood moved to approve the preliminary for the
"greenhouse" addition for the Hotel Jerome, seconded by Connie
Mc Crudden, all in favor...Nick Pasquarella opposed. Motion
carries.
Nick...opposed the approval because he feels strongly that the
Hotel should be cleaned up before any other approval is
given.
Members listen to Nlck...and agreed that perhaps an admended motion
or a deadline should be given the applicant. But after futher
discussion and the feelins given to the applicant, it was left to
the Public Hearing to decide a deadline date for the facade up-
grading.
Review of the awning request for Benetton in the Mill Street
Plaza by Cheryl Kaprielain, Colette Penne.
The awning for the Mill Street Plaza were put on about two years
ago, they are burgendy with samll lettering on the flaps of the
awnings. Benetton uses green as their color, and is asking to
use a Hemmlock tweed, it is a dark green with a lot of black
in it, it does go with the street light color the City has.
The building does have a dark green trim color and in front of
Peaches there is a terra cotta panel.
Benetton has the alley side of the building and them. is a window

a window and the first doors, and their awnings would be on the
fi~t store front.
Colette... if all the tenants in the building accepted the choice
of green awnings, ok, but if only one wants to put up the
the green awnings, that is not a good idea.
Pat Straight for Peaches in the Mill Street Plaza, is opposed
to the changing of colors of the awnings, or allowing different
colors for the building be used on different store fronts.
Georgeann...the feeling of the committee is that they do not want
multi-color awnings on the building, or a change of awning color.
Zoe Compton moved that the awnings for the Mill Street Plaza
stay as they are now, and that Benetton has to conform, seconded
by Connie Mc Crudden, all in favor, motion carried.
Designation of Structures: 126 E. Bleeker & 123 E. Hallam.
Colette Penne... the owners of the houses that have not been design-
ated already might be contacted and asked if they wank to be
designated as historic places. If they wish to, there are
advantages to having a house individual designated. The last
~lme HPC ~as'dOing this, Herman Ed~l, said said that the
houses that were in the Main Street or in the Commerical Core
Historic D~strict, were covered by an Historic overlay and Edel felt
these places were already designated.
These houses are individual structures of the miner's ere.
This item will be tabled till all the members nave a chance
to do a site visit.
The minutes for the meeting of October 9,1984 were moved for approval
by Mona Frost, seconded by Nick Pasquarella, all in favor, motion
carried.
Meeting adjourned.
