R ECO R D O F PROC E E D I N GS The Aspen Historic Preservation Committee held a special meeting on August 5, 1980 at 1:00 PM in the City Council Chambers. Members present were Jon Seigle, Terry End, Mona Frost, Richard Cicero, Georegeann Waggaman and Florence Glidden. Planning staff representative, Sunny Vann, was also present. William Clark was excused because of a potential conflict of interest. PROJECT REVIEW Park Place Development Preapplication Review Don Fleisher appeared before the committee with a totally new design for Park Place. His new architect is Tom Wells. He said that the ground floor will be all commercial with employee housing on the second ievet. The commercial space will consist only of Pitkin County Dry Goods and the Unicorn Book Store. He said that since Terry End had suggested that they create a relief for the wooden walk- way which comes from the Aspen Leaf, they took that into consideration and the new design evolved from that idea. He pointed out that some of the statistics, such as the square foQtage of the building, were in the letter handed to each member before the start of the meeting. He said the building materials will be brick with some accent of aggregate textured concrete. There will be oak moldings for the windows and doors with some concrete under the retail display windows. He also pointed out that since the building is very visible to Wagner Park and other activities, they are creating a rear to the building which is reminiscent of the front. At this point there was alot of discussion amongst the members of the com- mittee. Jon then asked Don to bring in a brick sample to the next meeting and he agreed but said that the real brick sample eannot be chosen until the building is ready for construction because what is available now will not necessarily be available then. He also said there will be a very soft contrast between the brick and the concrete, which will both be in brown tones. Richard asked if there was going to be a parapet and Don said there would only be a very minor one. Jon asked if there would be any access onto the roof and he was told that the employee housing would have sundeeks but there would be no access onto the roofJ Jon then said he appreciated what Don has done, responding to the committee's reserves and going to the trouble of setting up a special meeting. He thought it was nice to see a developer who was willing to cooperate with the HPC. Richard then made a motion to give preliminary approval. Terry then seconded the motion. Ail in favor; motion carried. The special meeting was adjourned at 1:45 PM. Robin R. Berry Deputy City Clerk
