August 5, 1975
Meeting was called to order by Chairman Groen at 1:07 p.m. with members Norman
Burns, Jerry Michael, Florence Glidden, Mona Frost, Bob Marsh and Terry End.
Also present was John Stanford of the Planning Office.
Groen noted that this was a regular meeting and would replace the
regular meeting of August 12th.

Request
Jan Collins, of the MAA, was present to show the plans for a fresh
air intake vent because of the excessive heat from the dishwasher
in the basement of the Whee~er. The fan would be on the outside
with no disturbance to the exterior of the building. Groen asked
if this would be the extent of the improvements with Mrs. Collins
noting that the MAA had put $35,000 into their area already.
Michael felt that the City should have anticipated the problems
before renting the basement.
Motion
Michael moved to accept the plans

Groen pointed out that this was the Victorian on 7th and Main
(formally the Stitzer House) that has been recently remodeled.
Tom Sharkey was present to explain the color scheme for the
exterior of the building. He noted that after having done some
research into Victorians, which showed that many were wooden and
unpainted, he had decided not to paint this building. He said
that they would be leaving the redwood siding and were selecting
colors that would be close to the redwood. He showed them shades
of red for the shingles and yellow paint that would be used for
the trim. The shingles, in round and square shapes, would be
placed two rows of each. Members felt that the yellow paint
was too bright and Sharkey admitted that the sample he had
presented was not the one he would be using, which was more muted.
Mrs. Glidden asked why he wanted the colors on the shingles with
Sharkey saying it was just for relief. Michael was concerned about
the possible "rainbow effect" that it might cause. Burns suggested
that they give approval conditional upon the shingles being
acceptable after they had seen them up. Stanford noted that this
building wasn't historic yet and they had not control over the
exterior. Members noted that they liked the idea, with the excep-
tion of the yellow, and Mrs. Frost complimented SF~arkey on what
has been done so far on the building.
Old Business
Groen asked if Stanford had anything new on the Main Street
rezoning. Stanford said that they had, in the Planning Office this
summer, an intern from the University of Arizona who had done a
picture inventory of the historic buildings on Main. Stanford
passed around the pictures with several members noting buildings
that weren't actually old enough to be historic. Groen asked if
they could be ready for the public hearing by Thanksgiving with
Stanford saying it was possible but that there was a lot of work
to be done first. Ms. End questioned what controls they would
have over the Stitzer house once it is designated Historic with
Stanford saying their control would be over repainting or remodel~
ing of the exterior. Stanford wanted to get together with members
to work on the Historic Preservation master plan and Mrs. Frost
felt that they should have some work sessions. Stanford suggested
having one the next tuesday and Groen thought that Mrs. Markalunas
should be invited also.
Marsh moved to adjourn with Glidden seconding. Ail in favor,
meeting adjourned at 2:05 p.m.S.
