Regular Meeting
Historic Preservation Committee
July 22, 1975
Meeting was called to order by Chairman Groen at 1:25 p.m. with members Jerry
Michael, Norman Burns and Bob Marsh. Terry End and Mona Frost were excused.
Also present was Bill Kane, City/County Planner.
Aspen Ski Corp- Chairman Groen opened up the public hearing on the proposed
final addition to the Ski Corp. building at 406 S. Mill Street. Architect
V.A. Hairabedian again represented the Ski Corp and noted that the
existing building was limited to brick and wood construction. He
also noted that City Building Inspector had wanted him to make a
separation of four hours but that he had only been able to make
them two hours inside on the back and east sides. They would be
adding another stairway and four new offices which would hold
DRC Brown and Tom Richardson plus a secretary. Marsh asked if there
had been any concerns by the HPC with Burns saying that there had
been nothing except the glass but that would not be coated.
Hairabedian noted that they would be matching the existing colors.
Groen closed the public hearing.
Motion
Marsh moved to accept the presentation today. Burns seconded.
All in favor, motion carried.
Approval of
Minutes
Burns moved to approve the minutes of July 8, 1975. Michael
seconded. All in favor, motion carried.
New Business
Groen asked the secretary to call members before the meeting to make
sure there would be a quorum so that they don't have any more delays
like at today's meeting. Secretary noted that, according to the
by-laws, it was up to the members to let her know if they will be
absent for a meeting.
Historic
Designation
of Main St.
Kane noted that he had assigned the work in the Planning Office
according to priorities and that John Stanford would not be able
to work on the historic designation of Main Street until November.
Groen felt that the main problem with that was that they might
be losing their City Attorney who is so familiar with the process
and they might lose more time with someone who is just getting used
to City Hall. He also noted that City Council had given the HPC
a directive to make Main Street historic as soon as possible.
Kane siad that one of the problems was that there was no longer any
strong proponent of the designation on Council or the Commissions
and that his office works under a push-down phenomonen. This means
that the City or County gives them new projects that take priority
over the older projects. He felt that the solution might be to
work it in with the other projects. Marsh felt that they will lose
ground if they don't get the process going. Groen said that maybe
they should start going to more of the Council meetings and voicing
their feelings. Burns noted that there was a chance of losing the
Victorian Montessori school on Main Street. Kane suggeste d that
Groen get together with Stanford and himself to work out the time
requirements and Groen said that if there was a problem with
Stanford's time, they could find people willing to help.
Representative Jan Collins was not present at the meeting. Groen
noted that they wanted to have two grills in the basement of the
Wheeler because the dishwasher gets too hot. There evidentally had
been no drawings and Stanford had told them last week that they
couldn't make a determination until there were some drawings. Groen
said he would not like to see grills exhausting odors onto Hyman
Street. Members waited for Mrs. Collins until 2:00.
Michael moved to adjourn with Marsh seconding. Ail in favor,
meeting adjourned at 2:00 p.m.
