TO:
Members of the Commercial Core and Lodging Commission
FROM:

Rotary Club of Aspen
SUBJECT:
Large Sponsor Duck placement
Dear CCLC members:
As you know, each year the Rotary Club of Aspen sponsors a wonderful community
event, the $1 million Lucky Ducky Derby, with proceeds supporting numerous
community youth groups and non profits, college scholarships for students at Aspen
High School and Basalt High School, and support of international projects, primarily in
Central and South America. This event draws thousands of guests, residents, and visitors
alike for the closest thing our community has to a county fair.
This year's event will be held on Saturday, August 12, 2006 in Rio Grande Park with the
Duck Race and release of approximately 30,000 adopted rubber ducks taking place at
2:06 pm into the Roaring Fork River at No Problem Bridge.
In the past, our Title Sponsor (at $15,000) was entitled to place one of the large rubber
inflatable ducks in the front of their business. This has included US Bank, Alpine Bank,
and others. This year, Morris & Fyrwald Real Estate have stepped up as $20,000 Title
Sponsors.
This request is to allow the large duck to be placed and secured in the front of their real
estate office on the Hyman Avenue Mall. It will be secured to the railings for their stairs,
leading to the office door. I have viewed the area and discerned that it will not block foot
or vehicle traffic (such as a Fire Engine). In addition, there is already a free-standing sign
for the business next door, and a large wooden bear for the business two doors down.
If the location is not acceptable than I ask your consideration in placing the duck on the
maroon colored metal awning above the Morris & Fyrwald entrance (which is their
property). Joyce from Planning has indicated that they would assist us in securing the
duck to the awning.
I will be available at this Wednesday's meeting to answer any additional questions you
may have and encourage your support of this most worthwhile community event.
Thank you for your consideration and support.

Hi, Kathy:
No, there is one duck that sits by the duck sales booth and last year Ed Van asked
us to move it next to the mailbox.
This one (another large duck) is the sponsor duck and we are requesting that it sits
in front of the Morris & Fyrwald office on the Hyman Avenue Mall. 1 noticed today
that there are several free standing signs, as well as tables and chairs, so the Duck
would be less obtrusive as those and secured to the rail in front of M & F Real
Estate.
In addition, 1 asked the neighbors their feelings (Rare Optiks, Eliot Yeary Gallery,
Harmony Scott Designs and Valley Fine Art (directly across) and all had no
objections (some even thought it might help business).
we are seeking approval to put the duck up starting Saturday, July 29 through
(including Friday, August 11). It would be moved to the Rio Grande Park on
Saturday morning, August 12 for the Derby Festival in the park. It would remain
that entire period...barring some Club Chelsea patron beating it to death.
Thanks again for your assistance and support.
Bennett
PS: As 1 mentioned earlier, if this is a cause for concern we could mount it on the
metal awning over their entrance.
Thank
~
