HomeMy WebLinkAboutresolution.council.084-06 RESOLUTION NO. <ott (SERIES OF 2006) A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF ASPEN, COLORADO, ACCEPTING AS A GIFT A CERTAIN REPUBLISHED ANTIQUE MAP OF THE CITY OF ASPEN FROM WILLIAM LIPSEY. WHEREAS, William Lipsey has expressed his desire to donate to the City of Aspen as a gift a certain republished version of the "Aspen Bird's Eye View" antique map first published in 1893 by Augustus Koch; and WHEREAS, the Bird's Eye View antique map is a panoramic perspective view of the City of Aspen, Colorado, that identifies in beautiful detail the street names and points of interest in Aspen more than a century ago; and WHEREAS, the original artist to publish the Aspen Bird's Eye View antique map, Augustus Koch, (1840-?) was born in Birnbaum, Germany. He received a good education (whether in Germany or this country is not known) and served as a clerk and draughtsman in the Engineers Office ofthe Wisconsin Infantry during the Civil War. Although his English was poor, he won an assignment as an engineering officer with an African-American regiment serving in the Lower Mississippi Valley. He began his bird's-eye-view career with a few pictures ofIowa cities in 1868 and 1869. He traveled to several other states, from California to New York and Alabama, before arriving in Texas in 1873. He worked for years with Joseph J. Stoner of Madison, Wisconsin, the same person who 'served as agent for both Drie and Brosius, who preceded him to Texas. Koch produced some twenty-four views of Texas cities that are known and dozens of views of cities in other states. Koch's views are known for their detail and accuracy. He returned to Texas on at least two subsequent occasions, revisiting cities that he had already drawn and producing updates for cities such as Austin, Brenham, and San Antonio. His death date is not known; and WHEREAS, said gift has been offered to the City of Aspen under certain conditions as set forth herein; and WHEREAS, the City Council accepts said gift in accordance with the conditions of the gift as set forth below; and WHEREAS, the City Council wishes to express its gratitude to the donor of said gift. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF ASPEN, COLORADO. That the City Council of the City of Aspen hereby gratefully accepts as a gift from William Lipsey a certain republished Aspen Bird's Eye View antique map first published in 1893 by Augustus Koch under the following terms and conditions: a. The republished map shall be displayed by the City of Aspen in the Aspen City Council Chambers. In the event that the republished map is not displayed in the Aspen City Council Chambers for a period of six months, or more, it shall revert to William Lipsey. The City Council shall determine the best location for the public display of the republished map within the Aspen City Council Chambers. b.
