Transportation Committee
February 11, 1971
Meeting was called to order at 5:00 p.m. with the following members
present: John McBride, Chairman; Carl Nutzhorn; K. N. C. B. Moore;
Curt Baar; Fritz Benedict; Bob Lewis; Storrs Bishop; and James Markalunas.
Also present, Herb Bartel, Regional Planner.
Transportation Proposals
Mr. Bartel explained the sub-committee comprised of James Adams, Fritz
Benedict and John McBride have reviewed the proposals. Sub-committee
discussed a general transportation study vs beginning with different
phases of a general study.
The sub-committee agreed the railroad might be worth considering.
Mr. Herron, of Denver, feels he could do the first phase of a railroad
study for an approximate cost of $3,000 which would take three weeks.
The sub-committee also feels the highway alignment study is of top
priority. Mr. Bartel reported he had talked with the firm of Voorhees
this date and they state they could do a highway alignment study, after
the first phase of the railroad study, in 6 months. Would outline three
alignments which study may cost approximately $10,000.
Mr. Bartel stated the question to the entire committee is - do we want
to recommend the c)mplete study at a cost of about $25,000 and maybe
not get the specific information we desire or do we want to start with
the two studies mentioned above.
Discussed the following as relates to the railroad as a transit system:
speed, capacity, flexibility, cost and effeciency.
Mr. McBride also stated the Board had discussed appointing a urban
designer on a retainer to coordinate the studies and fit them into the
total picture etc.
Committee indicated they felt this would be a duplication of the planning
department at this time.
Nutzhorn moved that we invite a representative from the
Wildcat interests to become members of this committee.
