JOINT PLANNING COMMISSION MEETING
OCTOBER 8, 1963
There was a joint meeting called for the City and County Planning Commissions
at City Hall. The guests for the evening, which were invited, were the members
of the U. S. Forestry Service: Mr. Paul Hank of the Glenwood Springs office;
Mr. Ken Scholz, Supervisor of the U. S. Forest Service; Harry Taylor, the local
representative from the Forest Service; and Chuck McConnell, recreational planner
in Glenwood Springs. Members present were: Wendy Morse, Fritz Benedict, Jack
Walls, Sam Caudill, Henry Stein, and .Bill McEachern.
The meeting came to order at 8:00 p.m. and a round table discussion was set in
motion. Items discussed were the Maroon Creek Road and its development in
which the Forestry Service indicated they had no plans at the present to pave
same. Mr. McConnell informed the Planning Commissions that he is working on
a Forestry Service Master Plan for the recreation a rea, and that this plan
will be available for our information at a future date. Mr. Scholz tnen ex-
plained to the Commissions the Wilderness Classification that the Forestry
Service has, and the procedure in designating the area as aWilderness area.
He also discussed recreational uses and the problems of such. There followed
a discussion with regard to the aerial bus proposed by Crested Butte and its
effects on the Wilderness area and Aspen. It was indicated that the heads of
the ski areas in Aspen had been invited to a public meetin~ in Crested Butte for
this subject, but that no one from Aspen was present at the time of the meeting.
The Forestry Service indicated to the Plannifl5 Commissions that they had given
approval to the Crested Butte group for a preliminary survey, but that no appro-
val had been ~iven by them on the project.

There followed a short discussion with regard to the problem of the Eagle County
Development caused by the Reudi Dam Project. All of the visitors from the Forestry
Service indicated to the Planning Commissions tha t a ny information that they have
will be made available to the Commissions so that a better coordination can be
accomplished between the Forestry Service ffild the Planning groups in the Aspen
area.
The meeting was adjourned at 10100 p.m.
