Deoember 6. 1958 DECLARATION We the undersigned, being residents ot Aspen or of Pitkin County. in the state ot C)lorado, do hereby declare that we want the pro- p,sed new high level State Highway Department Castle Creek Bridge to be located at the extreme west end ot Main Street. We want this for the following reasons: 1. This would establish a better, sater, more sensible route into Aspen trom the West, in accordanoe with nationally recognized good highway planning. 2. This route will have a greater.capaoity 1ihllln the present onf! \o,ear~1 the rapidly increasing volume of traffio moving in this direction. 3. This increased volume of traffio will be multiplied by the opening of two new ski area. west of Aspen. 4. This wou~d eliminate two 900 turns in the present rout. and oon- trol speed by safe legal methods rather than dangerous corners. 5. As Main street is 100 feet wide and 7th and Hallam Streets are only 75 feet wide the extension ot Main Street can best carry the largest volume of traffic. 6. This would conform with the looal overall traffio planning and present zoning laws and ordinances. We further state and deolare that the other bridge location is un- acceptable for the following reasonsz 1. For a period of time it would force traffic over a by-pass which has obstructions, is faulty. and does not have the capaoity to handle tree-moving, two-way traffio. . " 2. This by-pass could not handle traffio emergenoies of the out- laying fire distriot and seriously impedes tree aooess to the electrioal uaDstormers and power house serving this commun t GJ. 3. T 1e grade of the road at each end of the by-pass, even with favorable weather conditions, is hazardous. 4. For many months of the year this would be the only entrance into this rosort area; therefore. the economic and physical weltare ot the area and its visitors would be seriously endangered. 5. Traffic cannot freely and safely move on a by-pass that goes twice through a bridge construction site. 6. It is in no way desirable to have three school buses filled with children subjected to the hazards of this by-pass.
