The Planning Office recommends denial of the proposal based on the following: 1) The canopy is located in an area which is already covered and such has no purpose other than decoration. 2) The Cooper Street Building already has a canopy extending over the sidewalk - another canopy could begin to give an "add-on" appearance to the building and eventually result in a visual hodge-podge. 3) The probable purpose of the canopy is to increase the visability of the restaurant or "to convey or direct a message to the public concerning the identification of the premises or to advertize or promote the interests of any....form...or organization." (Article V, Sign Regulations, Section 24-5.1) If this is the primary purpose of the proposed canopy, the Planning Office recommends that the applicant consider a sign which can be integrated into the architecture of the building rather than an architectural addition which serves no purpose than that of a sign.
