HomeMy WebLinkAboutcoa.cclc.min.091609COMMERCIAL CORE & LODGING COMMISSION MINUTES OF SEPTEMBER 16, 2009 Chairperson, Terry Butler called the meeting to order at 8:30 a.m. Commissioners in attendance: Bill Dinsmoor, Andrew Kole, Don Sheeley, Mark Goodman, and Fred Ayarza. John Starr and Roger Haneman were excused. Staff: Kathy Strickland, Chief Deputy City Clerk Mitch Osur, Retail Association president Don said the parking employees were ticketing tourist on the first offense. Don met with Steve Barwick, City Manager and first offenders are now getting a warning. Mark said PR is our best advertising and the city needs to publicize Aspen. Julia Theisen, ACRA, Vice-president of sales and marketing. We are trying to come up with the theme of "12 days of XMAS". From the 20t" of December through New Year's Eve events will occur throughout the City. The Wheeler Opera house is involved with different performances. We need to get the retailers involved and how can we do that. There will be XMAS shows and we want this to be family friendly. Andrew said Nancy Lesley is putting on three days of events Dec. 23, 24 and 31St . We would incorporate our 12 days around the city's events. Andrew said the Wheeler is exciting and will promote events. Andrew said we can add clowns and carolers. Mitch suggested a scavenger hunt. Don said Nancy Lesley has carolers going around to the retailers the 23`d and 24t". Andrew said money is needed to market the event and added stuff. Mini magic shows could be incorporated Friday. Staff suggested Doc Eason. Mitch said XMAS day is very busy for Aspen Sports and that day should be utilized. Fred said XMAS afternoon is very busy. Andrew said the historical society should also be involved. Fred agreed to start with the 12 days of XMAS and work around that. Mitch said a scavenger hunt would be great to incorporate. Andrew suggested a retail package with coupons. Mitch scavenger hunt gets a card and you get it stamped and then it goes into a drawing. 12 winners for the 12 days of XMAS. Don reminded the board to include restaurants. Andrew said the title could be Aspen XMAS scavenger hunt. Mitch said we are three months ahead and can make this happen. Mitch offered the Hyatt ice rink for free skating. Terry suggested elves. Andrew suggested mimes. Julia said the ACRA has a marketing team. Will do press releases and then advertise it. Andrew suggested poster for the windows and a Christmas tree trimming which would involve the Parks Dept. Terry and Mark suggested chestnut roasting at the fire pit. Andrew said he can get Silk milk to handle the hot chocolate. Possibly we can get the windows that are empty decorated. Mitch said he will check into posters.
