HomeMy WebLinkAboutcoa.cclc.min.050411 COMMERCIAL CORE & LODGING COMMISSION MINUTES OF MAY 4, 2011 Bill called the meeting to order at 8:30 a.m. Commissioners in attendance were Terry Butler and Jim Pomeroy. Fred Ayarza, Siam Castillo, Don Sheeley and Andrew Kole were excused. Staff: Kathy Strickland, Chief Deputy Clerk Streeb - Lacrous Company — Justin Streeb and Kale Lacrous Lighting presentation. Kale said their staff are engineers and designers and we are in Basalt. Kale said they met with Bill and Andrew previously. The intent is to renew the holiday season and use new lighting concepts. Boost the economy and instill new traditions. We want new life into the town and use new concepts. We also want to boost retail sales and lodging occupancy during the holiday season. Instill new traditions and create new family memories for people who come here. Create interest through PR. Advocate green initiatives and establish traditions for Aspen. We want to create a lour for Aspen (only in Aspen) master plan for the month of December. Building lighting, area lighting and tree lighting combinations. Flood, accent lighting white lighting and projection lighting are proposed. Accent lighting brings out the structural elements of the building. Jim said you can also do layered lighting. Terry said she liked the idea of having different concepts on different buildings. Kale said you can also do 3D mapping on buildings, still images and you could create a media on a building such as the Wheeler Opera House. Kale said they have enclosures that are water and aired cooled. You can have an easel and kids can paint and project on the building. What kid wouldn't want to design something and transfer it on a building. Jim said you could focus on the clock tower and get the electricity from there. On the malls you could use up- lighting or strand lighting. Kale said the idea is if you go to Aspen you have to see this. Jim said you could create a Aspen tree lighting parade and draw people through the town and end at the Sardy house. Terry said a festival in the fall with lights on the aspen trees would be tremendous. Kale said you can have the lighting throughout the week and every day of the holiday have something different. You could also create stories about Aspen. Santa could shoot off the mountain and drop presents at the Wheeler and Elks bldg. Key words, classy and elegant and we want to create a story that isn't just flash lights. We want something that can progress through the years. Kale said you can project snowflakes falling. You could also use skiing. Kale said we are doing this for the city, community, local businesses and visitors. Bill said this is an advertising media. Jim asked if live video feed could occur. Justin said you could do replays of the downhill races from x games. Kale said the Wheeler Opera house, Elks bldg. and Independence bldg., materials install and programming would cost 1.5million. There is usually a 6 year life for projectors. Jim asked about the maintenance. There needs to be man hours to keep the snow off the equipment. The wheeler could cost $500,000. for setup. Kale said you would create your own infill structure. Bill said we need continuity of design throughout town. Terry said she likes the projection idea. The entire building comes alive.
