Julie said with the shiny paper and better print it will work well. Bill said he is pleased that this event is going on. Discussion: Bill asked about future funding and improving the 12 days of Aspen event in the future. Julie said the event is not funded for next year until feedback is given after the event. 1 COMMERCIAL CORE & LODGING COMMISSION MINUTES OF NOVEMBER 16, 2011 Julie said they did research with other communities to bring in other events. Vail has a rating card process. Julie said we are trying to bring in some type of system to bring in events. Bill said the pro bike race is not about bringing tourism to Aspen. Kiki said she thought the bike race was boring. We need to know who came here, did they come from Denver and did they come into town after the race. What businesses did make it work? Don asked if the ACRA enjoyed doing the XMAS event. Julie said when she did it she loved having the presence downtown and handing out the ornament made you feel better. Julie said they hand out the ornaments on XMAS day. Hannah said they are also handing out ornaments at the airport. Terry said it would be great if someone could calculate how many people showed up at each event. You would have a better chance of getting more money. Kiki asked if you could determine how many people were tourists or people that are already here. Julie said it would be difficult to do. You would have to ask each person. Mall lighting experiment — Lacroux Streeb Jeff Woods, head of Parks and Recreation Randy Ready, Assistant City Manager Randy said they have been working with Kale on this project. The lighting will occur on Mill Street this year and if council likes it, it can be expanded to the other two malls. Jeff said we will spend $30,000 this year for infill structure. We are confident council will be behind this. There is a mechanical device called 2 COMMERCIAL CORE & LODGING COMMISSION MINUTES OF NOVEMBER 16, 2011 the controller that will help the Parks Department so that no one has to go out and manually do it. The infill structure will be for the entire mall. On the Mill Street light polls we will install bulbs that you can control and add dimmers etc. which will create a mood. The clock tower will turn into something special. A projector will be installed so that we can put dancing images on the ground. Randy said the Sister Cities part of the mall will have the images on the brick. Jeff said the restroom mall will have lighting projected on the walls with images. Jeff also said there will be lighting on the large tree near the mall which will be icicles. We will do some up- lighting plus traditional lighting. We are also paying Kale for some of his time. Kale has also put in a lot of volunteer hours. Bill asked about funding for next year. Jeff said we can do a supplemental and we have $100,000 in the parks reserve fund. Randy said we feel the project has enough of a flavor that it can take over council's imagination. Don said he is glad to see Jeff and randy excited about this project. Don suggested adding lighting in the trees at Wagner Park on the Limelight side. That would lighten that entire area up. Jeff said Kale has a different approach and he feels the mall electricity next year can be redone without doing the entire infill structure. Jeff said council is spending 1.25 million to upgrade Wagner for infill structure, drainage, better grass and electricity. Bill said those that work for the Canary Initiative love this and they are very enthusiastic about the plan and the carbon footprint. Kathy asked about the store front lighting contest. 3 COMMERCIAL CORE & LODGING COMMISSION MINUTES OF NOVEMBER 16, 2011 Randy suggested discussing the store lighting next year after we see what this year's installation looks like. Riley said having the store fronts done partially would be worse. Wait till next year after this year's demonstration. Don agreed that next year we should discuss the store fronts. We will need everyone on board. Jeff said we can have Kale do a presentation in July for the businesses so they can determine what they need cost wise and see what this new lighting will do. Commissioner comments Bill said he wanted to know if the ACRA was thinking about any new special events. Unfortunately only concerts were mentioned. We have worked a lot for events downtown. I would love the chamber to be excited about new things. There is no one in the city in charge of this. Terry said we started the Saturday market. Terry said we need to be there for the lighting when the switch gets turned on and get the papers involved. Saturday Market Kathy said the agriculture vendors would like to start the market at 9:00 a.m. Kathy said she discussed this with Andrew and we feel 9:00 is too late. As a compromise 8:30 would work better and people won't know the difference. Motion: Don moved to start the market at 8:30 next summer; second by Terry. All in favor, motion carried 6 -0. Kathy mentioned that last year the agriculture vendors discussed an international booth. Kiki said she is opposed to the idea. If people want international items they can go to the grocery store and purchase them. 4 COMMERCIAL CORE & LODGING COMMISSION MINUTES OF NOVEMBER 16, 2011 Siam said it would be nightmare to control and it also doesn't meet our guidelines. Motion: Don moved to adjourn; second by Kiki. All in favor, motion carried. Meeting y g.djourned - 10: 0 a.m. Kathleen J. Stric land, Chief Deputy Clerk 5
