HomeMy WebLinkAboutcoa.cclc.min.120711 Commercial Core & Lodging Commission Minutes of December 7, 2011 Chairperson, Andrew Kole called the meeting to order at 8:30 a.m. Commissioners in attendance: Bill Dinsmoor, Kiki Raj, Riley Tippet and Terry Butler. Fred Ayarza, Siam Castillo and Don Sheeley were excused. Update on lighting. Kathy said Lacrouxstreeb should have the lighting up within two weeks. They are working with the Parks Department and doing Mill Street only this year and some infill. It will reduce man power for the Parks Department and Randy Ready and Jeff Woods are on board. Hopefully council will go forward with Cooper and Hyman malls next year. Terry said we need to show case it and do a lot of PR. We should also have Jeff Woods come down in January to discuss funding for next year. Terry also suggested a lighting ceremony. Bill said the Ski Company hasn't seen it and he would like ACRA to see it. The ACRA should be marketing the lighting program. Bill said we should have a large show with the ACRA and whomever else might want to view it. Bill said we need to get support from Steve and Torre in order to get it funded for next year. Kiki said once they see it they will like it. Bill said we need to incorporate this event to promote business. Andrew said we can use this as a marketing tool for the ACRA. Kiki said it is showcasing the mall and people will go to the mall just to see the lights. Riley pointed out that the stage is Aspen and people will travel into the mall to see the lighting. Bill said the projection part of it is the element and we need to keep the XMAS part of it included. We need this to be a month long event and the lighting is jazzing it up. It could be the market in the winter. Andrew said people coming Dec. 1st to the 15 is only going to be based on snow. 1 Commercial Core & Lodging Commission Minutes of December 7, 2011 Terry said we can get people here. Kiki said people can change their reservation . If we get snow we get a different crowd of people coming here than without snow. Terry said people come to see Aspen Colorado. Bill pointed out that 50% of people that come here do not ski. Andrew said the lighting is an added value for people to see. Bill said in Strausburg it is all about the market not the show. We would need a business plan. Riley said the lighting is one more thing for Aspen to have. People are already coming here and it is added value. The shops certainly can do something. Kiki said she went to Idleberg and people spent $5. a day and drank mulled wine. Terry said we have been working on the lighting for 6 to 8 months. We used to have a huge December and now we have a five day week. We are trying to drive people to Aspen. In the European markets it is festive. We want the entire month of December to capture people to spend money and there would be a lot of activity. Riley said the lighting is small and it will create a buzz. Andrew said the end goal is how we generate business. Andrew said maybe we do something for a kids week. Riley said when they get everything together I'm excited about seeing it. Saturday market. Andrew said when we went on the new street we used non - artesian booths. Our thought was maybe to eliminate them. Terry and Bill suggested we wait to see what comes in before we decide to eliminate service booths. 2 Commercial Core & Lodging Commission Minutes of December 7, 2011 The board suggested that food should be kept in the court not on street so that it is not so competitive with local restaurants. Disscussion: Riley said we need to create a channel for special events. Kathy said there is a new on -line application coming soon that should make things easier. Terry mentioned the new organic store on Hyman. Kiki said CP burger has done a good job with miniature golf and why isn't the ice rank used more. It is a wasted resource. Bill said it is owned by the Hyatt. Bill mentioned that the bike program Mirte Malory is promoting got a grant from clean air. Motion: Andrew moved to adjourn, second by Bill.
