Pumphouse Plan A brief comment regarding the change in the elevation of the structure proposed to house the snowmaking equipment on Little Nell; following our meeting and site inspection with Joe Harvey, I would like to offer the following on the elevation changes as they relate to the previously granted 8040 Approval: 1. As we observed in our inspection, the three -foot raising of the structure will not significantly affect the visi- bility of the structure from the appropriate view planes. Additionally, it seemed fairly apparent, that existing trees and the protruding contours of the Little Nell slope will effectively screen the structure from mast of the town. 2. By changing the proposed grading plan from 'a "pit" situation, as was originally proposed, to backfilling to the original contours against the reinforced foundation walls, the structure will be buried and considerably less visible even from up close (i.e. from the Little Nell chairlift). 3. It is true that this office expressed concern regarding the construction of the original plan adjacent to the twelve -inch (12 ") City water line from our concrete 1,000,000 gallon tank. The revised plan as is now pro- posed addresses our concerns and maintains adequate cover over the existing water line. In short, the Engineering Office has no problems with the new plan and feels that raising the structure will in fact alleviate some potential problems. • • Box 3104 t_ Winter Park, CO 80482 (303) 887 -3520 (519) 679-8240 \\Q\ London Towers • 15 Avon St. 379 Dundas St. Keene, NH 03431 ( 1 ` " Box 25, Station B (603) 352.7664 Alford London, Ontario N6B 1V5 • 29 Boulevard Helvetique (519) 679 -8240 Geneva, Switzerland 022/358450 International Inc. Telex 064 -5608 Telex 45- 23584 /ARMSA CH July 24, 1981 To: City of Aspen Planning and Zoning Commission Subject: Aspen Mountain Snowmaking Support System Primary Pumphouse Siting and Grading Revisions Substance of Changes - Building elevation raised 3.0 feet from 8088.7 (finished floor) to 8091.7 (finished floor). - Building set into hill (was formerly to be set on flat excavated site; same location). The south wall is now to be covered to 12 feet and the east and west walls will be backfilled roughly following the existing contours. All backfilled walls will be reinforced concrete and all exposed walls will be painted concrete block (as in the original plans). Reasons for Changes -The floor elevation was changed after consultation with city engineers who indicated that the original planned excavation may have disturbed the city's 12 -inch water main, or promoted erosion. - It was decided to set the building into the hill to lessen its visual impact, minimize necessary excavation, and remove any possible hazard to skiers.
