DATE PURCHASED: 3/22/1973 HOW FUNDED: 7th Penny funds LEGISLATION: Ordinance No. 24 in 1973, Ordinance No. 54 in 1977 zoned it SPA Resolution No. 37 in 1988 DEED: Warranty Deed, recorded 9/17/1973, Book 279, pg. 745-747, Reception #162368 The City of Aspen purchased this property in 1973 from James R. Trueman for $1,750,000 consisting of 13 acres. The Denver Rio Grande Western Railroad station was located on this parcel, where the playing field is located. The majority of the Rio Grande (Trueman) property was purchased with seventh penny funds; the bond ordinance states “to be used for parking and other municipal purposes” The conditions to be addressed at precise plan stage under #8 of Resolution Number 37 in 1988 (approving the conceptual SPA plan for the Rio Grande Parcel) state that the actions encouraged as part of the development of the Rio Grande site are to implement the Roaring Fork Greenway Plan and the Parks/Recreation/Open Space/Trails Plan.
