MINUTES OF SEPTEMBER 19, 2012
Vice-chair, Don Sheeley called the meeting to order at 8:30 a.m. Commissioners
in attendance: Terry Butler, Bill Dinsmoor, Kiki Raj. Siam Castillo, Riley
Tippett and Andrew Kole were absent.
Minutes
Bill made the motion to approve the minutes of Sept 5th second by Terry. All in
favor, motion carried.
Flowers in the roundabout.
Dan Nelson said he is planting perennials at the roundabout today.
Don asked everyone to come up with a goal for the next meeting
Adam Frisch, council member suggested the newspaper boxes.
Bill suggested starting with one particular area first.
Kiki asked staff to look at Rubey park first.
Bill mentioned piano's on the 16th mall. The pianos are free and a cover was built
over them and people play them all summer. It would be quite an event for Aspen.
Real estate signs
Adam Frisch, council member said real estate is more valuable if you can park in
front of it.
Karen Setterfield, broker said you don't know their absence but you know their
presence.
Don said he talked to Craig Morris and Joshua and company.
Karen said sellers want to see the signs up.
Don said we would like to standardize the signs. I don't like seeing things tacked
on the buildings.
Adam Frisch said he was thinking of standardize, shrink or eliminate the signs in
the residential area.

Jim Pomeroy addressed the construction signs that are quite large. The Bldg. dept
needs to know who is doing the work and it could be small and in a window.
Adam said in general they are also advertising.
Terry suggested an 8 V2 x 11 sign with all the contact persons.
Karen said she is for the regulation as long as it is enforced. I have 8 buildings for
sale. My sellers want a sign.
Rob Snyder has a sign in wolf camera's that is too big and out of compliance.
Karen said we would need lead time regarding the signs because they are
expensive and we would have to purchase different ones. People walk by and call
brokers. 'It is 50150 people walking up or people using the web.
Bill said we don't want to impede people doing business. Some size is
appropriate.
Don said there are signs all over the place and it looks like the entire town is for
sale.
Adam suggested working with the brokers and come to council with an appropriate
size. Black and white 2 square feet would be an example. We need to enforce the
existing sign violations.
Jim suggested doing it by zone districts.
Adam suggested a smaller sign and more enforcement.
Jim said the code would have to be modified.
Karen said it works if no one has signs or everyone has signs. Karen said we are
almost full downtown with rentals.
Karen said the signs should not just be for brokers it should encompass all
temporary signs. The retail fills up then the office spaces.
Adam said we need to find a better way for enforcement.

Commissioner comments
Kiki brought up the holiday season and suggested having
mulled cider at Escobar, Finbarr's and Red onion. We can start with small
businesses with mulled wine for the winter.
Kathy said this should be tied into the 12 days of Aspen.
Bill said he will pursue the piano costs and possibly we can get three.
Bill said the big idea is a winter market.
Kiki said we need to get people to want to be outside and eat etc.
Bill suggested carts with hot chocolate, mulled wine and roasted chestnuts.
Kathy suggested using the mulled wine and roasted chestnuts in one cart.
Bill also suggested shade over the streets for the market.
All members present were opposed to having anchor vendors pre-approved for
2013.
Meeting adjourned at 10:00 a.m.
