SUMMARY:In order to assist CDOT this year with its annual pavement repairs on Main
Street /Highway 82, the City will be performing repair work and will be reimbursed by
CDOT for the materials used.
BACKGROUND
The CDOT contracts with the City of Aspen for maintenance services on Main Street /
Highway 82. These services include minor repairs on the pavement (ie pothole repairs).
Because potholing repairs are only temporary in nature these areas need permanent
repairs in order to provide a pavement surface that can make it through the winter. As a
result, each year depending on the pavement condition, CDOT places permanent patches
on these failing areas.
DISCUSSION:
Unfortunately, this year CDOT has faced mechanical issues with its equipment, material
availability issues, and lack of staff availability. On October 11, 2019, CDOT notified the
City, that due to these challenges, they will not be scheduling their annual repairs on Main
Street / Highway 82. As a result there are areas of our pavement surface along Main
Street / Highway 82 that will not make it through the winter.
Because Main Street / Highway 82 is a vital corridor through the City, and its condition is
critical to our citizens and visitors, the City Streets Department crews will be installing
permanent patches in these areas. CDOT has agreed to reimburse the City for the
materials used in these permanent patches. In house labor and equipment typically
employed for our City maintained streets will be used to complete this project.
