HomeMy WebLinkAboutcoa.cclc.min.011514 COMMERCIAL CORE & LODGING COMMISSION MINUTES OF JANUARY 15, 2014 Vice-chair, Riley Tippet called the meeting to order at 8:30 a.m. Commissioners in attendance: Bill Dinsmoor, Terry Butler, Kiki Raj, Fred Ayarza and Don ' Sheeley. Hana Pevny and Siam Castillo were absent. Staff: Kathy Strickland, Chief Deputy Clerk Dan Nelson, Parks MOTION: Fred moved to approve the minutes of Dec.18, 2013 second by Bill. All in favor, motion carried. Dan said there is an Xgames event in Wagner next weekend and they are hoping for 6,000 people at the cost of$30. a person. They have hired 60 private security guards. Dan also mentioned that the icicle light were a hit this winter. Terry said it was over the top beautiful in the malls. Dan said the infill structure in Wagner Park will start after Food and Wine. Riley said he talked to Jeff Woods about the Winter Market and the appropriate power supply. Jeff said they can change the power outlets during the construction if the winter market goes forward. Scott Kenner, permit coordinator Sandy Doebler, Special Events coordinator Scott said major events are permitted 150 days out. Other events are permitted with fewer days. It all depends on the category. Sandy said some events can have a three year contract. Scott said the new software will be up in February or March and on the city website. Winter Market Riley said we are talking about the month of December. The Chicago market might put the event on with the city. Chicago would want specific things done. 1 COMMERCIAL CORE & LODGING COMMISSION MINUTES OF JANUARY 15, 2014 Bill said there are traditions that are offered to the market that make it authentic. The group in Chicago is for profit. It is very well organized. She is proposing to bring the market and vendors here. She is interested in doing it around the World Cup around the first of December through New Year's Eve. A month long event in Wagner Park has never been done. It would take a more extensive utility infill structure. The vending booths are wooden, snow proof etc. Another booth that has been looked at is one is produced out of Liverpool. The floors are wooden in the booths and wooden walkways. Ordering the mugs for spiced wine takes six months. The relationship with her German sponsors is strong. They are passionate about sharing this with the world. The Aspen venue is the pinnacle opportunity. She will only pursue Aspen. It takes a week to set up and a week to break down. Steve Barwick, City Manager asked about the marketing figures and who comes to the Winter markets. Bill said there are smaller resorts in Europe that have these markets. Don said they do it in Garmisch. Bill said there is probably 60% crafts and 4% food. Part of her market is to bring in local restaurants. Bill said Maren also incorporates the "gingle mingle" event to drive more people to the area. The idea is to have several things going on at once. Steve said Nancy Lesley needs to work with other businesses to rationalize the marketing. All the ideas need to be flushed out. Maybe it is a whole package. Nancy needs to discuss this with the community. We need a complete package of cost and how it would work and what other special events would go with it. This is a multi-year event. Steve said he needs documentation for council as to the initial investment etc. Bill said the booths would be built here. Steve said we need to know how many years, storage of booths, contract etc. Steve said Nancy can help with the proposal. Terry said we will need to up the electrical and do the conduit. 2 COMMERCIAL CORE & LODGING COMMISSION MINUTES OF JANUARY 15, 2014 Steve said it will take two summers to get the electrical, drainage and brick done in Wagner Park. Steve said we need to know about other events such as World Cup and the dating event to coincide with the Winter Market. Don said Andrew did a proposal on a dating event. Barry has a copy. Terry said it would be wonderful if we can give Maurin a green light to go forward. Fred thanked Steve and Nancy for coming down. When the word gets out this will be incredible for Aspen.
