HomeMy WebLinkAboutcoa.cclc.min.040214 COMMERCIAL CORE & LODGING COMMISSION MINUTES OF APRIL 212014 Chairperson, Riley Tippet called the meeting to order at 8:30 a.m. In attendance were Fred Ayarza, Hana Pevney, Kiki Raj, Terry Butler, Bill Dinsmore and Don Sheeley. Absent was Siam Castillo. Staff: Linda Manning, Clerk's office Dan Nelson and Chris Forman, Parks Nancy Leslie and Sandra Doebler, Special Events MOTION: Don moved to approve the minutes of March 5th, seconded by Hannah. All in favor, motion carried. Dan introduced Chris Forman. He stated the lights are almost down and back at Parks. They are conducting interviews for seasonal employees this week and are almost fully staffed. Bill asked about irrigation at round-a-bout and Dan replied it will be revamped. Chris said there is a difference between weeds and native plants. They need to add top soil and bring in more color. Terry said it would be great if it could look like the John Denver Sanctuary. Dan said they are working on keeping the town clean with all the dust lately. Fred asked if they could leave the lights up to save man hours. Dan said they are leaving the lights around the Wheeler up this year and Chris said they are thinking about an alternating year schedule to accommodate tree growth. Don brought up Kiki's email about Escobar wanting a tent with poles instead of something in the trees. Dan said he has no issue with that. Nancy Leslie said anything over a 10x10 would need a permit and they should contact the fire marshall. Singles Week. Nancy Leslie and Sandra Doebler from special events said for the past 4-6 weeks they have been asking if anyone knows anyone in the singles field. Nancy said the websites are inundated with people who want to have a singles week. They have contacted 12 websites and this is something Steve Barwick asked them to look into. Hana said she has met the CEO of Match.com and will look for his contact information. Bill asked how many days and what it would look like. Nancy said we would capture it as long as we could with a demographic of 40's and over. Bill said they shouldn't focus on that too much and include the 28-35's. Kiki said that group does not use match.com and need to include younger sites like okcupid. Nancy said she is working with a consultant. Hana said maybe a long weekend and to look at international travel companies who specialize in solo travelers. Fred asked what time of year and Nancy replied Thanksgiving to Christmas. Bill suggested they ramp up gay ski week instead of starting from scratch. Don asked what the next steps are and Nancy replied to keep submitting applications. The commission is in favor in continuing to pursue this. Power House Aspen Science Center Bill said Mitzi has been collecting ideas for the old art museum site. The physics institute is big into community service and interested in exposing science to the young. They have collaborated with Harvard and Stanford and it is an opportunity to bring people to town. Riley said there is a deficiency in this area for families. It should be more of a discovery center and interactive.-Don made a motion to support this, Kiki seconded. All in favor, motion passed. Riley said he will talk to Mitzi and Steve. Kiki brought up the idea of a mountain bike pump track for Aspen. She said it is a growing sport and Ridgeway has one. Bill said we have great mountain biking and an opportunity to bring events here. Riley said in addition to a pump track there should be a mountain biking event. Bill said it could be in collaboration with Snowmass. Chris said the bike park is actively being pursued by the Parks department. There is huge passion within the department to pursue this. Bill said there needs to be use beyond infrastructure. Terry brought up the council work session about the winter market and said Staff is missing the enthusiasm between a good idea and selling it. Riley asked about what to do differently next time. Terry said we need to lobby council members. Bill asked if the ACRA restaurant represent would be willing to meet with CCLC on how to pursue ideas and ACRA's involvement. Hana asked if the winter market idea is dead or if there is potential to bring up again. Fred said to bring it up at the right time. Bill asked Kiki about the music event. She said Aspen is a good venue and she is trying to gain interest. Hana asked how it will compete with Jazz Aspen and Kiki said it would not be jazz. Bill said the calendar for opportunity is very small. Riley said they would continue the conversation when Kiki has more information. Don said the art museum is opening in August and it may be helpful to have Heidi at a meeting. Terry said there are not enough of doggie bag stations around town. She also said it has been a hard winter for businesses like Frete and Bootsy Bellows. Bill said there will be issues with the fire marshall and outdoor dining requests. They need clarity on what is off limits. He said there will be a big change this summer with all the restaurants that are leaving. Fred thanked Parks for participating in the meetings. Kiki said she will pursue the music festival and would like to bring Michael Goldberg on board. The Belly Up is doing a great job bringing music to town and would like them to get the public's support. She also mentioned Silver Peak and how they are having trouble getting a credit card processor. Hana said she may be able to help with that. Hana said she supports the music idea. Bill mentioned We-Cycle and the parent company went belly up and there is an opportunity to help. Riley said the member services committee of ACRA is doing outreach. Fred made a motion to adjourn, seconded by Don. All in favor, motion carried. Meeting adjourned at 10:10 a.m. I i
