Aspen Recreation Advisory Committee Meeting Minutes: July 13, 2021

Meeting Minute Approval: Approved. Karen Motioned, Sam Second all in favor.
Discussion items:
Introduction of New Board Members: Welcome, Candace Cross. Candace is an avid user of the Aspen
Recreation Center. She has served on other committees and attended the Citizen’s Academy. Candace
enjoys civic engagement to connect with the community.
Welcome, Jay Scharer. Jay is an avid user of the Aspen Recreation Center and Pickle Ball facilities. Jay is
looking forward to supporting the Recreation Department and getting involved with the community
(Jay and Candace were approved by City Council July 13, 2021 with the consent calendar.)
Presentation on the ½ cent tax renewal process: Postponed for August meeting.
Ice Instructional Updates: Postponed for August meeting.
Project Updates: New carpet for the Red Bick was quoted. Aquatics is continuing the search for a
toddler slide that suits the pool layout. New trees have been ordered, and the patrons have well
received the climbing feature. The training room downstairs below the Jr. Hockey office will have
custom professional lockers. The smart tv is installed and ready for use. We are continuing to make
some improvements to the downstairs area, including security cameras. The facility has new lobby café
tables and chairs, and we are replacing some conference tables and chairs and some other furniture.
The Aspen Ice Garden upstairs area needs new carpet and paint and some electrical work. Projects have
been challenging in this labor and material shortage market.
General Recreation Updates: Staffing shortages remain a problem to returning to pre-pandemic
operations. Day camp numbers are limited. Swim Lessons are at a 10% capacity. Facility hours remain
reduced, and some features such as the climbing tower are not open. For the hours and programs that
are available, the numbers are steady. When ski resorts open, if staffing shortages continue, a reduction
in services is likely. Three full-time positions are open for application.
