REGULAR MEETING COMMERCIAL CORE & LODGING COMMISSION JULY 7, 2021
Chairperson Jeb Ball called the meeting to order at 8:30 a.m.
Commissioners in attendance: Jeb Ball, Angi Wang, Amanda Tanaka, Candice Olson, Kiki Raj, Bill
Dinsmoor. Absent were Charles Cunniffe and Terry Butler.

Other attendees: Councilor Ward Hauenstein, and ACRA representative, Mackenzie Sexton
COMMISSIONER COMMENTS:
Mr. Ball said that Paradise Bakery is looking for employees. The commission joined in to say that
everyone needs employees right now. Every business in town is short staffed.
Mr. Osur said that maybe CCLC could work with ACRA on a fall job fair. Ms. Sexton said that ACRA did do
one recently which was virtual and that they are planning to do another. Ms. Tanaka suggested going to
the high school as well.
Councilor Hauenstein said the city is currently working on a compensation and classification study. He
said that Sara Ott agreed there is a pay problem at the city. He said the city lost 13% of it’s employees
over the past year. He suggested that maybe someone from HR could come to CCLC and present the
study to them. He said this isn’t sexy subject matter, but it’s important.
Ms. Raj brought up the night bus in Cambodia, which she said, goes from one side of the country to the
other. She keeps thinking about something like that here which operates in a similar fashion to get
people from one place to the next for work without having to house them. Ms. Olson said they had to
end up providing housing for her employees at Local’s. Mr. Osur said that is happening a lot in Vail right
now with employers purchasing housing and providing it to employees because the city there owns very
little housing.
Mr. Ball said the representative with the Roaring Fork Bear Coalition was supposed to come today and
present, but she will do that at the next meeting. Mr. Osur said the rep is from the Florida area where
they also have a huge bear problem. He said there have been zero bear calls this year, which is great,
but Glenwood Springs is out of control. We’ve seen obvious results here but need to continue with
education.
Ms. Wang asked for clarification on retailers activating on the street. Mr. Osur said that city council gave
them an option to activate three days a month and the only ones that have taken advantage of that are
Gonzo and Skye Galleries and Mary Catherine. He said that next summer, this won’t be an issue.
Mr. Osur said that everyone seemed to enjoy the parade this year. The kids and the retailers liked it.
Mr. Ball asked Mr. Osur to make a parking presentation at some point.
Mr. Ball brought up the survey on initiatives for the balance of 2021 from the last meeting and said the
welcome bags and the newsletter ranked low and passed out the results to the commission. He said that
outdoor activation scored high amongst everyone and suggested they come up with criteria to see if it

should continue or not. He suggested presenting something to council in September. The city clerk
reminded everyone that the cost of square footage per day will be back next summer so there will not
be as many restaurants interested in street activation. Ms. Olson and Ms. Wang volunteered to focus on
this subject. Mr. Osur said that CCLC should recommend a parking option to council in the presentation
as well. Ms. Tanaka said that she feels that bicycle and pedestrian safety are extremely important and
more so than cleaning up alleyways. After what happened with the little girl last summer, she feels that
it does tie into outdoor dining and activation. Mr. Ball agreed and said those two items could be the
main focus and should shoot for the end of August on both. Ms. Tanaka and Ms. Raj volunteered to
participate on the safety issue.
Mr. Dinsmoor said that after we make a recommendation, it’s still up to council to decide. He said that
CCLC will need other things to work on and focus on annually besides these issues and the Saturday
Market. He suggested working with ACRA on special events, which would be part of a long-term goal
and stay after things that will generate revenue. He said he doesn’t feel like these other issues are
revenue generators.
Ms. Olson said it would be helpful to have some shoulder season events so that local places of business
stay open during that timeframe of October 15th to December 15th.
Mr. Osur said he would reach out to Nancy Lesley and Sandy Doebler to come present on special events
to CCLC.
Mr. Dinsmoor went on to say that whatever the event is, it must be able to execute with longevity. He
said Food & Wine took a long time before it gained traction. He mentioned dating apps and having
dating events such as Jingle Mingle. Mr. Ball clarified that Mr. Dinsmoor thinks CCLC needs to have some
other continual involvement in another issue besides the ones outlined earlier and Mr. Dinsmoor said
yes, one other anchor event. Ms. Olson agreed and said to find something everyone can benefit from
and said she loves the dating ideas.
Mr. Ball asked Mr. Osur to coordinate the outdoor issues with everyone. Councilor Hauenstein is going
to forward the Art Study to CCLC and addressed the elephant in the room from the previous night’s
meeting. He said that if the Wheeler RETT is be repurposed, the arts want 60% of it.
Mr. Ball motioned to adjourn; Ms. Olson seconded. All in favor, motion carried.
