Kids First Advisory Board Minutes
Thursday, May 3, 2018 – 11:30 – 1:30
In attendance: Chad Schmit, Sue Way, Stefan Reveal, Matt Zubrod, Rebecca Pascal, Linda Consuegra,
Shirley Ritter, Cecelia Martin.
DESIRED OUTCOMES:
• Approve minutes from previous meeting – March & April minutes MPU
• Consider capacity questions and ideas– Questions to the members as we face a need for more childcare
spaces:
o How does Kids First Advisory Board feel about funding a different level of quality?
o Should we be funding wider or deeper?
Finding balance is important. Kids First community goals include availability, affordability, and quality.
Funding deeper could mean fewer spaces available. Capacity would seem to come first, then have to support
with affordability and quality.? Continuing to fund at the same depth requires more money. Next steps
include talking with the directors, and bringing that information back to the board. No decisions were made.
• Considering Infant-toddler funding – Funding level hasn’t changed in a number of years; number of
classrooms funded has increased and caused us to overspend in this account. Funding is awarded based on a
tiered system, using Colorado Shines quality levels; these could be adjusted. Consider funding toddlers less
and infants more or funding infants only? Look at financial aid and I-T as places to cut costs in order to fund
wider.
• Kids First Advisory Board Site visits- Childcare program directors still value site visits. The board agreed
this year to visit Growing Years, Rhoda, Early Learning Center, and Aspen Mountain Tots. Shirley will
send out a doodle poll to find a June date that works.
• Director participation – Directors also valued having Kids First Advisory Board members come to director
meetings. The next dates are June 20th and August 15th. These meetings will be at 4:00pm at a location
TBD. Kids First will buy appetizers. The board members can explain their role, talk about current issues,
and respond to questions. Shirley will write a few talking points so that there is a consistent message at both
meetings.
