Kids First Advisory Board Meeting Minutes Monday, January 30, 2023 Board Retreat In attendance: Stefan Reveal, Chad Schmit, Michaela Idhammar-Ketpura, Jessica Garrow, Sue Way, Logan Hood, Mimi Hauenstein, Nancy Nichols, Megan Monaghan, facilitator Wendy Huber. Approves Minutes from November 2022: Stefan motioned, Michaela seconded, KFAB approved. Rebecca Paschal Resignation accepted: Stefan motioned, Jessica seconded, KFAB approved. Logan Hood will be moved from an alternative position to a Board member position. Board Members Chad Schmit and Sue Way terms expire June 2023, each board member indicated the desire to serve another term. DESIRED OUTCOMES: ● Gain understanding of Kids First Programs: o Each Kids First Advisory Board Member shared information with the group including their personal background, their interest in Kids First, their expectations and questions. o Megan and Nancy shared information with the group about their background and experience. o A new workflow chart was shared and introduced to the group. o Nancy reviewed information about the current Kids First programs including: ▪ Current grants and Operational funding ▪ Financial Aid ▪ Nurse consultant o Megan reviewed information about the current Kids First programs including: ▪ Coaching ▪ Quality Improvement ▪ Resource Teacher ▪ Intern program ▪ Teacher training ▪ Parent workshops ▪ Burlingame Childcare project o Nancy reviewed the 2022 financial information for the Kids First grant programs and talked about the 2023 funding and projections. o A presentation of the Kids First Mission and Goals along with the City of Aspen Mission and Values followed by a group discussion of the alignment of Kids First and the City of Aspen. Additional discussion included the past and future of Kids First and the understanding of the alignment to the Mission and Goals and if these two documents represented the continued work of Kids First. o Kids First Advisory Board and staff also reviewed the Advisory Board By Laws, and Ordinance. ● Board Discussion and Direction o The Kids First Advisory Board completed an exercise to review 4 key areas. • Kids First Strengths • Areas for Growth and Improvement • Opportunities • Threats/Obstacles o From this exercise and through discussion the following items of directions were discussed. • Improve communication including internal, external, City of Aspen, and Childcare Programs. With a focus on both Kids First Advisory Board and Kids First Staff responsibilities. • Working on collaboration with Kids First Advisory Board, City of Aspen Council and Pitkin County Commissioners to work on common ideas and programming. • Continue to explore and advocate for housing for the childcare workforce. • Develop and offer direction to childcare programs with an emphasis on business management, board trainings and non-profit guidance. • Continue to steward and promote the development of a new childcare facility at Burlingame. • Continue to look for opportunities to increase childcare capacity. • Work on finding ways to collect more data and analytics. • Kids First Advisory Board work directly with the childcare program director through regular meeting opportunities to share both positive and negative feedback and to develop stronger Kids First programming and design new programs.
