Commissioners present were Charles Kennedy, John Start and Jori Busch. Bill Dinsmoor, Terry Butler, Andrew Kole and Eric Cohen were excused. SATURDAY MARKET Gall Price, Aspen Potters brought examples of her pottery that she would like to sell in the market. The items are take home gifts and will fit in a suitcase, The aspen leaf represents a unique line and people can take home a piece of Aspen. It is Gail's intent to bring Aspen potters up to a new level of standards. Jon mentioned the possibility of rotation of spaces. Scott, general manager at the Thunderbowl said they make all of their own breads. The market would give exposure for locals who do not get to the Highlands. The flour comes from Greeley Colorado. Scott said he could do different breads each week. Kevin Doyle said he opened up a winery in Cedar Ridge. He buys Colorado grapes and makes and sells Colorado wines. Colorado has a bad reputation for wine. He uses French oak barrels hand crafted. The grapes are from Palisade. His bottles cost between $9. $18. and $20. Steve Roads has his house wine at the Woody Creek tavern. Kevin said he doesn't make bulk wine he uses 60 gallon barrels. Opening time: Some of the vendors didn't want to open until 10:00 a.m. Staff relayed that the market opens at 8:00 a.m. The board needs to be consistent on the opening time. Everyone agreed to open no later then 9:00 a.m. Audrey Tom owner of the Noodle bowl in Basalt said she has lived in the valley 15 years, She desires to bring two products to the market. One meal is preparing on-site and will be offered to the public. The second product is a 16-ounce meal of noodles and vegetables. The sauces are all homemade. The meal is prepared in Basalt and ready to take home. Audrey said she has done festivals and food venues for the past ten years. COMMERCIAL CORE & LODGING COMMISSION M/NUTES OF MAY 15, 2002 John said the intent is to not have vendors Compete with local restaurants. Clearly half of y0ur presentation competes with local restaurants. The board suggested that Audrey come back at the next meeting and present alternative take home food dishes. Barry Gordon said has been here for 18 years. He represents the retailers that created the original farmers market. He said the board needs to look at the problem that we are having from a broader scope. We need action that will have a greater impact. When a tourist comes it is the total experience of Aspen that they want to bring back home with them. The market could be lined with chairs and chefs put on cooking demonstrations. Grass roots could film it and those at home can watch. The restaurant loves it because they get exposure. Every Saturday we could have a cooking demonstration. Right now everything in the market is the same and in between you have a few different things. The market is boring, you go in and leave. People love to watch other people. A cooking event of the city is a big event. Everyone will start looking at going to the market for the cooking demonstrations. Barry said we could also provide bikes to deliver the fruit from the different vendors. John said providing seating would be a good idea. Gall told the board that you can purchase easy up tents at Sam's Club for $ 100. They also have plastic chairs. Toni Cronberg supported the Saturday market, She suggested that barricades be put up at each end of the alley. She also suggested that the expansion occur where the library plaza is. / Toni said the brick Wall near the parking lot by Boogies and Ozzie's needs painted. Staff suggested she contact the owner of the building and suggest that it be painted. Toni also suggested that more lighting in the alley behind Little Annie's needs addressed. Staff was directed to contact the streets department to see if lighting can be provided. 2 COMMERCIAL CORE & LODGING COMMISSION MINUTES OF MAY 15, 2002 Barry also had another idea of having a Saturday market logo and sell Aspen Saturday Market logo bags. The senior citizens would love to do the bags. There are many volunteers that would offer to do the bags. Staff relayed that more applications are coming in and they will be interviewed at the next meeting. MOTION: Charles moved to adjourn; second by don. All in favor, motion carried.
