HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes.NXGN.Regular.20221207Next Gen Minutes 12-7 Roll Call-Nicky Byrne, Cody Horn, Michaela Carpenter, Zach Kops. Tyler not in attendance and Bodhi resigned Approval of minutes from November 2nd. Nicky Byrne, Cody Horn, Zah Kops, Michaela Carpenter. Nicky: We were all asked to come up with 5 values that define Aspen and we want to embody, after we figure that out we can focus on what we can our annual goals to be for 2023. Mine are environmental stewardship, inclusive to all, innovator of solutions, one of a kind, community engagement. Michaela: Environmental stewardship, connection, regeneration, wonder, enjoyment. Cody: Tradition, righteousness, patience, environmental stewardship, connection to nature. Zach Kops: Community, preservation, accessibility, pride, ownership. Nicky Byrne: Based on that, what are some realistic goals and missions we could tackle this coming year? Cody Horn: It’s important to think about what we can actually achieve based on funding and resources. Is it making recommendations on things in front of city council or should it be more focused on events, social gatherings, and info sessions. Nicky: Historically it has been all of that, it is important that we are aware of the minutes and current issues council and the boards are facing. We would typically have one person rotate each month who would go through the minutes and find issues that they thought were relevant to Next Gen that we could put forth our comments on and provide our recommendations. If there is something we are more passionate about we can host events. Our largest issue with Next Gen is retention, finding momentum and figuring out who we are and who we want to be. We need to build a solid routine as well as introduce the community to us and what we can do. Figure out a way to increase out longevity so we don’t have these same issues of retention going forward. Cody: One thing I thought that would generate interest is a weekly standing breakfast at locals at 7:30. Michaela: I agree with that and I feel like meeting once a month is great and structured but it just gets buried under all our other focuses. We could do it at the clubhouse or locals. In the past has the group focused on a singular item or have they looked into different issues individually and then bring them back to the table? Nicky: In the past we would as a group identify the main issues we wanted to tackle annual goals. Then we would have subcommittees, but we had a larger group 6-9 members, so a team of 2-3 would focus on issues. As a smaller group now, it depends on what we want to do. Cody: I am willing to put an ad in the paper, Michaela can organize a conference room and we can say just come in and chat and that will give us a platform to debrief our monthly meeting. Nicky: I love that idea of a weekly meeting open to the community if it could fit with our schedules. Cody: It could be a standing meeting so come if you can and if not don’t. Michaela: I feel like we are all self-motivated enough to be diving into one thing and if there is overlap we can team up. I am committed to diving into the salaried council position but I’m happy to do that individually if 2 of you want to do the APCHA regulations and qualifications. Maybe we think of 3 topics but I think any more than that may feel disorganized. Zach: I think less is more initially so maybe we just have one. Only 4 of us made it here today and 3 of us are in a car. If we just focus on holding each other accountable and all work on one thing then we can get some momentum and expand more, but if we spread ourselves thin initially it may not be as productive. Cody: I like one or 2, Michaela is willing to spearhead that on her own and I’ve already started writing boiler plate letters to collect signatures for APCHA. To credit your idea, maybe we go in order, we could start with the salaried position for council and then go in order. We could make a priority list and do one at a time. Nicky: I’m in agreement with that, do we want to start with Michaela’s issues or maybe look at APCHA? Cody: Let’s start with Michaela’s and move down the line. If a standing breakfast takes footing then we can start thinking about other stuff there, but we can be working on other stuff on our own. Nicky: Michaela what are some helpful tasks that we can think about either individually or as a group from what you’ve already explored on this issue. Michaela: I am happy to bullet point them and send them out and via email and we can each tackle one. Cody: Next we have amendments to bylaws but we should probably skip that because we can’t amend them unless we want to put together a formal document that combines all of that we said to pitch to council at their next meeting. Nicky: We are all still working on the bylaws so let’s keep working on that and table it to a later date. Cody: Marketing strategies, who has access to Facebook and Instagram. Do we have them? Nicky: We do have an Instagram account but it hasn’t been update in a while, we have Facebook as well. Cody: Do we have followers? It would be cool if it was popular and we could post something about a breakfast. Nicky: We have 304 followers and last post was August 2021. Cody: I say we keep it, 300 is better than 0, start tagging and adding things. Is it too audacious to say we make a weekly or biweekly post? We could start local discussion threads based on whatever we are thinking that day. Nicky: Would you want to spearhead that right now Cody? I can get you the login info. Cody: Sure, we can take turns, I will start it out. Is there anything we should not be posting about? Maybe that a question for Torre? Torre: That’s tough, social media is a tough tool to get what you want out of it. Sharing views or statements and platforms is one thing, looking for participation is another. One way conversations can be easy two way conversations can be difficult. The best use may be public awareness and bring an audience into what you are doing. What are the guardrails, we don’t know. Even with council we have issues with social media. There is a great avenue, but only certain aspects use for what you will use it for. Cody: Maybe not anything divisive but informative. Torre: We can always learn by trying Cody: I’m happy to start that off and test the waters. Do you think that covers marketing strategies? Nicky: With Bodhi stepping down there will be 2 positions opening up. Put some thought into who you think could help out and have the time to jump on board with us. Put the word out to your friend groups. Michaela: Is there a way for a content creation container at these Breakfasts on Wednesday. We could ask them for 15 second thought provoking “what do you care about right now as a young person living and working in town”. We have a catalog of what our values are and what theirs are we can build on. We can come to a census of what we all really care about and what we want to see happen. It’s such an overwhelming question, we could let the population guide us in a way. We could post the 15 second snippet as a story and it could be marketing for people to come engage with us the next week. Nicky: I really like that, it could start conversations. Michaela: As we start to form issues and we want to put them in front of council, having them already backed by people in the community will support our efforts. Zach: I wanted to bring up the mission. I think Torre tasked us with defining our mission. Are there things in our values that we can incorporate into our mission, so we are all in alignment in our mission. Michaela: I feel like there are institutions already set up to really support those things, maybe part of our mission is to support those missions or connect them to the public. Zach: Is the mission our North Star? Cody: Yea Zach: Are we good with it or do we want to revise? Cody: That could be homework, we could take the minutes from this meeting and combine everything into a new mission statement and decide what we like next week? Nicky: We can do it on the working bylaws google doc. We are coming up an adjourn. Cody can you recap what our homework looks like and things we can think about before next meeting which is January 4th. Cody: Homework, Nicky get me passwords, I’m going to make a commitment to make at least by weekly posts, we will all get into the google doc and contribute to the mission statement based on our 5 values from today. Michaela if you could spearhead what you think a good launch point would be, we will begin on salaries for council members. Keep making modification the bylaws. Nicky: Motion to adjourn All in favor
